PESHAWAR:

The Taliban will not attend planned peace talks with the United States in Saudi Arabia this month, and want to shift the venue to Qatar, Taliban officials said on Sunday, seeking to fend off Riyadh’s push to include the Afghan government in talks.
The upcoming negotiations, the fourth in a series aimed at ending the 17-year war in Afghanistan, are scheduled between the leaders of the Taliban and US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad to discuss the withdrawal of foreign forces and a possible ceasefire in 2019.

Leaders of the group have rejected the Kabul government’s offer for direct talks, despite growing international pressure in favour of the Western-backed Afghan government having a seat at the table.

“We were supposed to meet US officials in Riyadh next week and continue our peace process that remained incomplete in Abu Dhabi last month,” a senior Taliban member based in Afghanistan told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

“The problem is that leaders of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) wanted us to definitely meet the Afghan government delegation, which we cannot afford to do now, and we have cancelled the meeting in Saudi Arabia,” he said.

The Taliban want to change the venue for the talks to Qatar, he said, the political headquarters of the group that is fighting to restore strict Islamic law in Afghanistan and the site for earlier talks.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the group has decided to cancel the meeting in Saudi Arabia, but did not provide information about a new meeting venue.

The United States embassy in Afghanistan did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Another senior Taliban leader said the group had explained to Saudi Arabia that it was not possible for the Taliban to meet the Afghan government at this stage.

“Everyone is aware of the fact that the Afghan government wanted the US and its allies not to leave Afghanistan and we have paid a heavy price to expel all foreign forces from our country,” he said.

Russia reaches out to Afghan leaders for Taliban talks, angering Kabul

“Why should we talk to the Afghan government?”

The Taliban regard the United States as its main adversary in the Afghan war and views direct talks with Washington as a legitimate effort to seek the withdrawal of foreign troops before engaging with the Afghan government.

The war in Afghanistan is America’s longest overseas military intervention. It has cost Washington nearly a trillion dollars and killed tens of thousands of people.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict have intensified since Taliban representatives began meeting with Khalilzad, an Afghan-born, US diplomat last year. Officials from the warring sides have met at least three times, but fighting has not subsided.

Meaningless anyway, Americans think they have a divine right to stay in Afghanistan forever and the Talibans only goal from talks is to severely reduce or remove US presence. How would they ever agree?

What a waste of time! They are being sent to the after life in droves, either they negotiate now or will have economy class tickets to hell soon!

You really think the Talis have any say in this? The moment their patrons stop the tap, the Talis will evaporate as the likes of Gulbadin, Masood etc.

Stop kidding yourself, there is clear state of hostilities between Afghanistan and Pakistan and once that is resolved, all these maggots will vanish as well.

They do what they want to do.

They do as GHQ commands them to do!

Afghan Taliban cancel peace talks with US officials in Qatar
PESHAWAR: The Afghan Taliban have cancelled peace talks with officials from the United States in Qatar this week, following disagreements over the agenda of the meeting, the group confirmed on Tuesday.

The two-day talks were scheduled to begin today (Wednesday) in capital, Doha. The Taliban had rejected the participation of Afghan government officials in the deliberations.

Taliban have rejected numerous requests from regional powers to allow Afghan officials to take part in the talks, insisting that the US is their main adversary in the 17-year war and that Kabul is a "puppet" regime.

The Taliban, Afghanistan's largest armed group which was toppled from power by a US-led invasion in 2001, called off their meeting with the US officials in Saudi Arabia this week following Riyadh's insistence a span of four months are a clear proof of Pakistan’s strong support for Afghanistan,” Daudzai was quoted as saying.

While briefing the foreign minister about his role to help create harmony among various stakeholders, the Afghan special envoy noted that both Pakistan and Afghanistan had a unique relationship marked by commonalities and similarity of interests.

“This opportunity needs to be fully utilised by cementing various bilateral mechanisms of cooperation,” he said. Afghanistan wants to make the maximum use of the excellent framework provided by APAPPS in all areas of cooperation. It also wants to enhance bilateral trade and economic activities and more regular cultural and people-to-people contacts was the need of the hour.

“Both sides agreed for regular exchange of high-level visits for creating greater harmony and coordination on various areas of mutual interest. Truly reflective of the brotherly feelings between the two peoples, the close cultural and historical bonds must be harnessed to usher the Pak-Afghan partnership into the new era for mutual benefit of both countries,” said the Foreign Office.

Earlier, Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan Atif Mashal met Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua. The Afghan embassy said they discussed matters of mutual interest, including refugees, trade and enhancing people-to-people relations, and preparation for arrival of the High Peace Council delegation.

I dont follow Afghan fantasies, but surely if Pakistan was keeping the Taliban afloat, America would immediately jump on it like they are doing with their claims of "Haqqani support" based on the most flimsiest evidence

Also if you people were genuinely concerned, then:
a) wouldn't be opposing the border fence and security project across the whole Afghan border
b) wouldn't be publicly supporting fringe groups in Balochistan and KPK
c) would attempt any form of negotiation with Pakistan rather than be embarrassingly sidelined by the Taliban in peace talks

1) By all means fence the border, but you don't need to fence the border to disallow Talis, they are sitting in settled areas of Pakistan, mostly in Pindi, Karachi.
2) Tit for tat I suppose
3) I agree and this what Ashraf Ghani has stated several times that there is state of hostilites between AF-Pakistan and that needed to be negotiated and settled. Talking with Talis is a waste of time in my opinion, Afghans needs to talk to the patrons.

/Peace
