Taliban on verge of victory over NATO in Afghanistan: European diplomat admits 'this war is not winnable'

Don't believe the fake news. 911 attacks were planned in Germany......not in Afghanistan. Taliban knew nothing about the operation, and had little interest in global terror attacks. Biggest flaw of the campaign was to lump Al Qaeda and the Taliban together. USA and NATO should have limited revenge ops to Al Qaeda, wiped them out, declared victory and gone home. It was a huge strategic miscalculation to make defeating the Taliban an objective as well. It turned the war into an unwinnable quagmire. If westerners don't know who the enemy is and how to defeat them.....then there better off withdrawing their forces.

Great post.
Indeed, after 9/11, Americans rushed into an invasion and occupation of Afghanistan. There was a lot of rage in America but to launch an attack only in October of 2001 was too rushed. I know the Talibans were refusing to hand over OBL to America but gradually they would have come around had time been allowed. Invasion of a country like Afghanistan--not some tiny job, given the recent USSR debacle--should have been THE last resort. But it became the first choice.
Talibans should have been co-opted with great pressure applied via Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. American knew that Talibans had no global agenda and were not the enemies. Al Qaida would have been sorted out by elements of the Talibans, the ISI and the CIA.
This all is so obvious now--but it should have been obvious even in the Fall of 2001!

Pakistan could annex Afghanistan ofcourse first making deals with them to do so and then annex.. Annexing a country that defeat NATO would be awesome on Pakistan's CV

I have always wanted Pakistan to just Annex Afghanistan. It is extra manpower against the Indian front and they will need everyone they can get plus the Pathans are quite formidable fighters and capable. Just imagine arming these pathans to the teeth and sending them over. They will run thru India like a hot knife thru butter. Incorporate the pathans into the Pak army and re-train them to use tech warfare and just cater to them. Unbeatable entity.

Afghanistan should become a Pakistani province

American continued occupation of Afghanistan is the main cause of instability and unrest in the region.
That's not true. It's the people of region why the region is unstable and why USA is not leaving.

only India can liberate afghans from barbaric Talibans only they can give freedom to Afghans!!

What? First of all Pakistan won't allow another entity outside of NATO to set foot in there besides that after this peaceful talks it will come under pakistan influence and nuclear umbrella. The goal is long term peace in Afghanistan. Why you calling patriots barbaric? reported.

It is the other way around the Afghans end Indian empires as per tradition

They wanted evidence from the Americans to justify to others why they would hand OBL over to the Saudis. Without it, they were honor bound by the moral code to protect their guests, how ever long it took. Nanawati (protecting guests in your home) is one of three key red lines of Pashtunwali. It took twenty years, and a lot of sacrifice, but that was the price they were willing to pay for their honor. It should be a reminder to the rest of the world what kind of people the Afghans are.

Another superpower and NATO defeated in Afghanistan. This shows general Gull was correct. Death by a 1000 cuts

When America attacked afghanistan it was sole superpower unchallenged by the world. Now it is a laughing stock of the world in which no one respects it anymore.

I have been extremely critical of the Talibans for not handing over OBL to America. But now I am beginning to realize that the Talibans, as benighted as I thought of them--and now-- had a strategy in place: You got the watch, but we have the time. How can someone defeat an enemy like that??? Napalm Bomb the whole country? As Trump said, not possible. And THUS he decided to pull out.

PS: A personal account, I am old enough to remember the rise of the Talibans to power in mid 1990s. I had a vague sense of satisfaction then!! Maybe because I used to be slightly more religious then I have ever been since then. But a part of me was also a nationalistic Pakistani who thought the Talibans, being backed by Pakistan, were better for Pakistan. But then of course the Talibans don't know the Golden Mean of Aristotle or 'Meeana Ravi' of Islam. And when they destroyed the Bamiyan Bhudda statues, despite genuine, intense pressure from Pakistan, it just made me puke!! But on the other hand, are the Soul-Sellers, Drug Dealers in disguise, and under the protection of foreign occupying forces.

Well we knew that was coming, in Afghanistan you don't only fight the insurgency but you fight the terrain itself, US bombs fell on Mountains and Taliban hide under caves, their modern Technology was off no use there against them, to some extend yes it help but yet you can not bomb the whole range of mountains which god knows how many caves are hiding. Its better to bring our troops back, there is enough blood has been shed, so many soldiers have PTSD and taken their own lives, bring them home and let countries which surround Afghanistan deal with it, Afghans wants Taliban so be it, if they want Abdullah Govt so be it.

I too am old enough to remember their rise in ‘94 and the story of them taking out a commander (hanging him from the barrel of a tank for abducting two girls).

They claimed, when asked why did destroyed the Buddhas, that the tourists visiting Afghanistan were coming to see the statues but they were not allowing humanitarian aid to reach their country. A very shortsighted cultural destruction not even considered by Afghans in the thousands of years those Buddhas stood there.

The other side, are grifters plain and simple.

So, in this whole mess, Pakistan had to deal with whomever wouldn't be hostile to her. It was so shortsighted that there wasn’t a consensus build between the Afghans, Pakistan and the west after the 2001 invasion of what would be satisfactory to all sides. At the time (2001-2003) even the Talibs seemed like they were ready to disarm and head home. But when Afghanistan became a “gangster paradise”, it was every man for himself.

hopefully now they will see the value in getting global recognition and will act more responsibly, should they end up (in whole or part) in power again.

This is all BS news and propaganda to make fools of everyone. UNTIL US/NATO are in A-Stan, the Taliban and the Afghan people have NOT WON BUT STILL under Foreign Occupation ! If some of you guys think that US will leave in September than you are honestly fools.

Mullah omar was asked how on earth will he face the might of super power US. He replied... With the might of the real super power and creator of everything. Today the so called super power is finding excuses to run away.

He might still turn out out to be a more significant figure in the Muslim world than Ayatollah Khomeini
