WASHINGTON: The Taliban could isolate Afghanistan's capital Kabul in 30 days and potentially take it over in 90 days, a US defense official told Reuters on Wednesday, citing a US intelligence assessment.
Taliban fighters have taken control of eight provincial capitals in six days, a pace that has surprised US officials.
Taliban forces now control 65% of Afghanistan and have taken or threaten to take 11 provincial capitals, a senior EU official said on Tuesday.
Taliban control 65% of Afghanistan, EU official says, after series of sudden gains
Until last month, US intelligence assessments warned that the Afghan government could fall in as little as six months.
The US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the new assessment followed the rapid gains the Taliban had been making around Afghanistan.
"But this is not a foregone conclusion," the official said, adding that Afghan security forces could reverse the momentum by putting up more resistance against the insurgent group.
It was not immediately clear if this was consensus view of the intelligence community or if different intelligence agencies had different views, which would not be uncommon.
US President Biden said on Tuesday that he did not regret his decision to pull US troops out of Afghanistan after more than 20 years, saying the Afghan troops outnumber the Taliban and must want to fight.

The United States has essentially pulled all troops out of Afghanistan, except those staying to protect the US embassy and airport in Kabul, with the military mission set to end on Aug. 31.

Hope they kill a bunch of diplomats

They (talibans) will kill diplomat's of which country ??

• EU countries which are part of NATO ?? They'll be gone before talibans start rolling into Kabul .

• USA has over 600+ soldiers in Kabul protecting their facility so that's not possible to happen (they'll probably leave before talibans start taking over the capital).

• Indians are already packing their bags, left every consulate in Afghanistan. Maybe just an embassy in Kabul is functioning but soon your embassy will be empty as well.

• Talibans don't have a beef with anyone else..

• Eventually all embassies in Kabul will be vacated once the talibans start taking over Kabul..

maybe in future Few countries will open their embassies in Afghanistan, if they recognize Talibans Govt, which USA will oppose & bully those countries with sanctions + imposing some sort of restrictions on the countries so that no one else dares to recognize Or accept the Talibans Govt.

It will be much less. The Americans are kidding themselves.
Hope they kill a bunch of diplomats in the finest traditions of ISIS, which is exactly what they are too.

Enjoy your decades of misery, Af-Pak.

LOL Look at you. Crying like a baby. You got booted out and now we are going to extend CPEC LOL Papa America begs Pakistan to do more. We will do more, but only with China.

Stupid assessment with the way things are going they can take isolate within 30 days and take over if they choose to, but their slowly chocking them into submission. I feel the real action will happen after 31st.

Enjoy your strategic partnership with isis aka Taliban.

sour grapes.... he who cant reach the grapes will say they were sour anyway.....

afghanistan is a huge geopolitical prize. many great empires sacrificied enormously to conquer it. It was a huge part of the Indian geopolitical strategy against pakistan.

India even tried to fund an Iranian port to supply afghanistan.

the afghan government is falling apart and India hasnt lifted a finger... besides talk and talk. how is anyone going to take India as a serious country anymore? next time India offers anybody security guarantees, id imagine the indian diplomats will get laughed at right in their faces..

India is not a serious country. if there was any doubt when they bent over to the slightest american anti-Iran pressure. let the doubts be laid to rest now.. absolutely pathetic.

This is how stupid you Indians are can't differentiate between the two -- not knowing the Taliban are also fighting ISIS in Afghanistan.
Its a Bloods and crips style turf war. Ideologically they're the same, and you know this better than anyone but are blinded by hatred for India and Afghanistan.

When did India ever guarantee security for them?

Also, whatever happened to your pipeline with Iran, spl being neighbours etc... all it took was a ph call from DC.

Those who live in glass houses.....

Kabul regime’s strategy seems to be devolving the fight to militias. They seem to be the ones betting on a civil war to save them.
