If Taj Mahal is built by traitors so is Red Fort,' says AIMIM's Asaduddin Owaisi

NEW DELHI: The AIMIM's Asaduddin Owaisi had a stinging response today to a BJP MLA saying the Taj Mahal was built by a "traitor" - "Traitors also built Red Fort, will Modi stop hoisting Tiranga (tricolour) (from there)"?

Owaisi took it one further and asked if the PM would also stop hosting foreign dignitaries at the Capital's iconic Hyderabad House, because that, too, was built by "traitors".

Earlier in the day, a video surfaced of Sangeet Som, a UP BJP legislator, saying the Taj Mahal isn't part of Indian culture and shouldn't be either, because the man who built it, Shah Jahan, "tried to wipe out Hindus". He added that Mughal emperors Babur, Akbar and Aurangzeb were "traitors".

The AIMIM's Owaisi wasn't the only person critical of Som's comments. The Samajwadi Party (SP) and the National Conference (NC) also slammed Som.

NC leader Omar Abdullah wondered if people looked forward to Prime Minister Narendra Modiaddressing the nation on Independence Day from New Delhi's Nehru Stadium instead of from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

An SP spokeswoman said the Taj must not be dragged into any controversies.

"Don't create controversy around Taj Mahal. It brings lot of revenue," said the SP's Juhi Singh, about the BJP MLA's comment.

The BJP's Som, though, indicated he doesn't believe the Taj Mahal should be historical site.

Touching on the recent dropping of the monument from a State list of Uttar Pradesh's historical sites, Som wondered why it should be considered part of Indian culture and history.

"Many were sad when the Taj Mahal was removed from the list of historical places. What kind of history? What place's history? Whose history? The history that the man who built the Taj Mahal imprisoned his father? The history that he wanted to wipe out the Hindus from all of Uttar Pradesh and India?" asked Som.

A nation should embrace its own historical value and cultures and should not sacrifice those in favour of colonial or repressive cultures which enslaved it. Having said that, is Islam part of Indian culture. It came, it saw, it governed and it settled. Now that the Hindu majority have created an India which they feel embraces their culture, they should not do so at the expense of the minorities.

Well it is their internal affairs.

I do not care about what they do to Muslim monuments in Northern India and in the former areas of Hyderabad.

Hussain sb,

1.We will keep flying our flag on Muslim monuments built by Muslim foreigners.
2.We will keep earning revenue from them.
3.We will keep abusing their builders (occasionally).

Now, what are you going to do about it, apart from cribbing on PDF?

Regards

No problemo.. keep your history and religious relics buried under the monuments built by Muslims.. No problemo..

And keep abusing them.. No problemo at all..

He is a MP. He is holding public office, He shouldn't have said that

better to take down the Red fort than Indian Flag
he said in response to the taj mahal story... i dont see why its wrong. why would you fly your national flag on a fort build by invaders? utterly shameful, no?

Maybe lost in translation, but I cannot understand the usage of word "traitors" for Muslims emperors of Sub continent. They were outsiders, not local to this region. How come they become traitors? Would the Brits be classed as same? Doesnt make sense.

Wonder what India would be like if they disowe the history of Muslim rule, start demolishing the old relics of past.

Might be related, but there is a lot of baggage from history which the Hindu population of India is finding hard to shed.

"If any romantic relationship is shown between Queen Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji, we will burn cinema halls screening the film,”

Seems like love jihad was live and kicking back then as well!!
