TAIPEI - Taiwan is slated to test a missile for the first time that could hit Beijing, a report said Wednesday.

The island's defense ministry immediately denied the report on the medium-range surface-to-surface missile, but said research was being carried out on "various weapons systems.
The missile, designed to hit targets up to 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) away, will be launched Thursday and Friday from Chiupeng, a tightly-guarded base in southern Taiwan, Taipei-based Next Magazine said.

If successful, the weapons project codenamed "Ching Sheng" would move into mass production stage, according to the usually well-informed magazine.

The defense ministry plans to deploy 150 such missiles, on top of 240 existing cruise missiles, to form one of the island's main deterrents against Chinese attack, it said.

The medium-range missiles could also be used to strike other major Chinese cities such as Shanghai and Chongqing as well as its ballistic missile bases in eastern and southeast China, it said.

"Research and development of various weapons systems have been carried out as scheduled," a defense ministry official told Agence France-Presse, but added that "the content of the report is not true."

Tensions across the Taiwan Strait have eased significantly since President Ma Ying-jeou of the China-friendly Kuomintang party came to power in 2008, pledging to boost trade links and allowing in more Chinese tourists.

Yet Beijing still refuses to renounce the use of force against Taiwan should it declare formal independence, prompting the island to seek more defensive weapons.

The island has governed itself since it split from the mainland in 1949 at the end of a civil war.

The magazine said China had boosted the number of its missiles aimed at the island from 300 in 2001 to 1,400 in 2008Report: Taiwan To Test Missile That Could Reach Beijing - Defense News

hey don'y want to take over giant china, they are making sure that giant china don't take over tiny Taiwan.

They don't need to worry about that, Uncle Sam guarantees them protection.

we don't worry about taiwan's cruise missiles. they're so inaccurate they'll probably hit india and there's no case where they'd be helpful: if they launch first we'll turn taiwan into rubble, if they don't launch first they'll never launch at all.

as if few missiles can protect them, even if they wanted to take over Taiwan by force, they wud have done it by now

A few missiles can make turn Beijing in to rubbles..do you really think Chinese will allow their hard work turn in to ashes?

do you have any idea what a cruise missile is?

hint: it'll be flying at 10 m above sea level in one of the most heavily guarded airspaces in the world, for thousands of km, in complex terrain with multiple mountains. it will be vulnerable at every single stage of flight. we can shoot it down 5 minutes after it launches when it is not even outside taiwan. if it survives that we can shoot it down again when it approaches the coast. if it survives that we have literally over 10 thousand automatic anti-air guns, mostly in the countryside. if it still survives we have another ring of SAM deployed around every major city.

and even if it hits, it'll cause an explosion radius of about... 5-10 meters. its not a nuke. the payload is about 200 kg.

if the test go successful then

Ohh Thank you sir for your enlightend post..now tell me do any of you chinese like a missile hit on your Beijing or Shanghai??what do you think, your government will risk it??

maybe we should sell cruise missiles to maoists. india's air defense is not nearly as good as ours, the maoists could easily take out prime minister of india with one of them.

every time you talk off topic and trolling but don't worry mod will not do any thing against you

China would eventually reunite with Taiwan as the Dragon becomes stronger on the world stage and interlinked with other major countries like uncle Sam and the EU.

This would further isolate Taiwan politically. So it is only time before it happens.

Yeah and China wud be standing with there hands folded, watching Taiwanese missile coming towards Beijing instead of intercepting it, nways this missile is still in testing stage
