The AIDC 1 Ching-kuo is an technologically advanced fighter aircraft named after the late Taiwan President Chiang Ching-kuo. It entered active service in 1994, and 131 production aircraft had been manufactured by 1999.

The Indigenous Defence Fighter (IDF) project was a major priority and technological achievement of the domestic industries of the Taiwan with some minor subsystems, design, and components subcontracted to United States defense companies. The jet fighter was built by the Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) based in Taichung, Taiwan.

The technicians in the IDF project who tried very hard to promote the 'localization' of the fighting jet and finally had a chance to announce that after hours of hard work they managed to produce 1/3 of the parts of the 'home made plane' by themselves.
And that was the end of a story 20 years ago and THE very achievement, which even made the Indians looks better, of the aviation industry of the ROC.

P.S. Chiang is not the president of Taiwan but the Republic of China.

I think the plane only had one engine. It takes alot of design ideas from F-16 but the engin is underpowered. It is mainly for air defense.

It's basically a pretty good plane of that era, but its radar performance was not powerful enough to support the full power of Sky Sword 2, which has a max range of 60km.

The exact same RESTRICTIONS have been placed on Japan, Korea and Singapore. That's why it's absolutely imperative to have an strong independent sovereignty!

Sometimes it is not too difficult to step outside the circle. Which is why the ROC wants to develop some of their own hardware rather than buy everything from US.

For example a ROC shore based surface to surface missile designed for fighting against enemy ships in the strait will have range restriction meaning that they cannot be fired at instellations on mainland.

How ever if you designed the missile software/hardware it is simple procedure to change some parameters to circumvent restrictions. (ie. By changing flying hight settings from near sea level to high altitude the range can almost be tripled !)
