There was a new variant of the T-72 known as T-72BM introduced in 2006 armed with 2A46M main gun and Relikt ERA which is the most advanced ERA available from Russia also has new FCS and engine. There isn't much info available on the T-72BM but it is the last production model.
Russia also has a another variant known as T-72M1 Modernised or more commonly known as T-72M1M.
Here are some of the features of the T-72M1 Modernised
Armament
The main armament of the T-72M1M is 125- mm smooth-bore gun 2A46M with automatic loader, coupled with a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun. The main armament is stabilized with two-axis, with electric drive in electro-hydraulic drive horizontal plane and electro-hydraulic drive in vertical plane. The T-72M1M is fitted with a new improved fire-control system now allows the upgraded T-72 to fire the 9M119 series laser-guided missile out to a maximum range of 5,000 m. The latest versions of this missile have a tandem HEAT warhead to defeat MBTs fitted with explosive reactive armour. The fire control system of the upgraded T-72M1M min battle tank is designed to control and fire all types of weapons carried by the tank and to provide the means for the battlefield observation by the commander and the gunner. The T-72M1M is also armed with a 12.7 mm calibre machine gun weapon station which can be aimed and fired under remote control. A range of six smoke grenades discharger is mounted to each side at the front of the turret.
Protection
The baseline T-72 MBT is very well protected over its frontal arc by various combinations of cast steel armour and laminate armour. The T-72M1M is equipped with an universal explosive reactive armor (ERA) protection system, which significantly enhances the survivability of the tank under anti-tank attack. The explosive reactive armor kit is designed to reduce irrecoverable tank losses incurred as a result of shaped-charge and armor piercing attack. The battlefield survivability of the T-72M1M has also been significantly increased by other means including the installation of a high speed fire detection and suppression system, special paint to reduce the thermal signature of the tank, providing additional protection for the ammunition and filling the fuel tanks with special material. The T-72M1M is also equipped with the KA3 Arena active defense system. The Arena Active Protection System is an active countermeasure system developed at Russia's Kolomna-based Engineering Design Bureau for the purpose of protecting armoured fighting vehicles from destruction by light anti-tank weapons, anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM), and missiles with top attack warheads. It uses a Doppler radar to detect incoming warheads. Upon detection, a defensive rocket is fired that detonates near the inbound threat, destroying it before it hits the vehicle.
Propulsion
The T-72M1M is powered by the V-92S2 four-stroke V-12 liquid-cooled supercharged diesel engine developing 1,000 hp which gives a power-to-weight ratio of 22.2 hp/tonne. The installation of the more powerful engine is claimed to increase its road speed to 65 km/h and its dirt road speed to 40 to 45 km/h. The T-72M1M is equipped with an torsion bar suspension with each six road wheels on each side, the idler at the front, drive sprocket at the rear and three return rollers supporting the inside of the track only. The track and suspension has also been upgraded. The rubber-tyred road wheels have increased carrying capacity and torsion bars with an enhanced level of operating stress have been fitted.
Accessories
For improved battlefield survivability, the upgraded T-72M1M MBT is fitted with part of the TShU1-7 Shtora active jamming device, to increase the battlefield survivability of MBT against attack from Anti-Tank Guided Weapons (ATGWs) with a Semi-Automatic Command to Line Of Sight (SACLOS) guidance system as well as missiles and artillery projectiles that use laser illumination. T-72M1M is also protected with the aerosol screen setting system, which is designed to hide armored vehicles from hostile observation by setting aerosols screens on the way of the emission s generated by his optoelectronic weapons guidance and control systems. The T-72M1M is also equipped with a satellite navigation system installed in the tank operates in thee NAVSTAR/GLONASS global navigation systems. This system is designed to continuously determine present position of the tank in the Cartesian coordinate system and indicate it on a display with the accuracy of 25 m. The tank position is indicated on an electronic map, which gives the possibility to control subordinated and attached, store the route of movement. The T-72M1M is equipped with the latest technologies of radio communication, with internal and external network. The T-72M1 protection is increased with an fire-fighting equipment which is designed to detect a fire and activate a fire extinguisher. The time it takes the fire extinguisher to discharge a fire-extinguishing aerosol does not exceed 150 ms.
So Instead of going for modernising our own T-72M1 why not go for the Russian Modernisation which will improve the T-72 capabilities. Also we can select our own Sights and FCS for this modernisation program.
