Syrian opposition agrees in Astana 'foreign troops' should leave their country - Interfax
ASTANA. May 28 (Interfax) - Syrian opposition members meeting in Astana have called for the soonest withdrawal of 'foreign troops' from Syria.
"Concerning the presence of foreign troops, all of us agreed that it was necessary to intensify the process or draw up a plan to withdraw these troops," human rights activist Ammar Abdulhamid said at a press conference in Astana on Thursday.
"This is a big problem for all sides," he said.
"So, we agree that it is necessary to withdraw these elements within a short time. This should be part of the peace process," Abdulhamid said. "A peace agreement envisaging the withdrawal of foreign troops should now be reached."
"The thing is that they have no relation either to Syria or to the Syrians. They simply exist within Syria," the human rights activist said.
"We have discussed this issue, and this is one of the points on which we have come to terms," he added.
The Astana meeting declaration says it is necessary to withdraw all foreign mercenaries from the conflict zone, to restore the army consistent with the national defense principles and to fulfill all international resolutions demanding to stop financing and support of terrorism.
