Sweden's population reaches historic ten million milestone

The population of Sweden now for the first time in history exceeds ten million people.
Statistics Sweden confirmed at 7.47am on Friday that the population of Sweden has hit the ten-million mark. It is impossible to know exactly when it happened or who the ten millionth person is, because of various delays when authorities report new births and new residents.

In 2010, Sweden was predicted to reach ten million in 2021, but the population has increased faster than expected. Between 2010 and 2015 the population grew by some four percent a year, behind only Luxembourg in the EU, and far above the EU's average of one percent.


There are two reasons behind the increase: the birth rate and immigration.

"The main reason the population is increasing faster than what was thought a few years ago is because immigration was at an historic high and since then it has increased even more. Population prognoses normally expect that the immigration surplus will go down to the historic average level. That has however not happened yet," Tomas Johansson, population analyst at Statistics Sweden, explained to The Local earlier this week.

The birth surplus, or the number of newborns minus the number of deaths, has been at around 20,000-25,000 for the past couple of years. The immigration surplus meanwhile has ranged from 45,000 and 78,000, mainly because of increased immigration while emigration has remained relatively stable.

"Around three fourths of the population growth can be explained by the immigration surplus. Therefore you can say, somewhat simplistically, that immigration causes the high population growth," said Johansson.

Even more astonishing fact is that by 2100, if projections hold, one Muslim-majority state, Nigeria, will have more population than ENTIRE EUROPEAN CONTINENT (Including Russia)!

Furthermore, as largest economy of Africa, Nigeria will have a bigger GDP output in terms of purchasing power parity (International Dollar) than all European economies, including Germany by 2050 (By 2100, the difference would have grown significantly further, I presume).

Correction: Nigeria is Christian majority.

It's not.

It was Christian majority, not anymore. Under 30 Nigerians have almost 60%, 40% divide in favor of Islam.

Even overall, Nigeria became Muslim majority in the most latest DHS survey data (2013). Pew projections for Nigeria have it Muslim majority for future as well.

Pew's projections have Nigeria 58.5% Muslim and 38% Christian by 2050. And remember, these are "projections" and not mere "predictions"... If there are more Muslim kids being born in Nigeria today, it's not hard to 'project' how the overall population will look like when these kids would grow up and replace older dying generation..

I am not "celebrating" the increase...I am just laughing at the failed European culture that literally got us the biggest fu*k up for demographics in history.

Population grows, stables, and decreases. Pakistan's population will do the same (Africa is another story though). But European demographics should be a concern to Europeans. But they are all busy hating Muslims

He was trolling and flame-baiting. However, a declining population and the inverted population pyramids they create are major problems for any country and its economy & welfare state.

Countries like Russia and Japan are already struggling with this. It's why Europe is allowing so many immigrants to come to the continent. Once fertility rates fall below replacement level, they rarely increase again to replacement level, and the population declines in perpetuity. It's a serious problem.

That's also because of huge immigration i.e. refugees otherwise the number would remain stuck at 9.4 millions for a few years and then start to fall as there are not enough young people to replace the old.

Yes it is beautiful country and the largest Scandinavian country both in terms of the area and population... I have travelled and stayed there multiple times and I enjoyed my stay overall.

Easily the first. Estonia has a population of less then 2 million, Denmark and Finland with roughly 5.5 million each and Norway being slightly smaller with a Population of 5 million. Åland has around 30,000 people, the Faroe Islands roughly 50,000, Iceland coming in at 320,000 and Greenland with about 50,000 people. Sweden's population is double that of the next nearest competitor.

In terms of economic size Sweden (580 Billion Nominal GDP) barely beats out Norway (525 Nominal GDP) with Denmark (335 Nominal GDP) and Finland (265 Nominal GDP) following in that order. Of course Sweden wasn't blessed with our gift.

Iceland is a very distance 5th among the nations typically referred to as Nordic with a Nominal GDP of just 13.5 Billion USD. Estonia beats Greenland, Åland and the Faroe Islands coming in at about 30 Billion USD Nominal GDP, but when you're put in the same discussion as a nation that doesn't have a measurable economy (Åland), one with an economic output of just 2.5 Billion (Faroe Islands) and one that brings in a paltry 2 Million annually (Greenland), you're pretty much an outlier among the Nordic countries, which is partially why Estonia is often forgotten when discussing the Nordic nations.

Sweden's the population heavy weight of the Nordic countries by a longshot.

Out of all scandinavian countries, Norway is by far the best. The best country in the world in my biased opinion
