WASHINGTON: US National Security Adviser John Bolton said that the decision to suspend military aid to Pakistan was not taken lightly as the Trump administration was fully aware of the consequences of taking such an action against a nuclear weapons state.

In his address to a Washington think-tank — the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies — earlier this week, Mr Bolton also said that the US wanted Pakistan to cooperate fully in war against terrorism as “it’s a matter of extraordinary importance” to America.

“It was before my time, but the Trump administration did not take the decision to cancel a substantial part of the military aid package to Pakistan lightly,” he said.

“It was done knowing full well that Pakistan is a nuclear weapons state, and the risk that the government could fall into the hands of terrorists that would get control of those nuclear weapons was particularly serious.”

National security adviser says war against terrorism is a matter of extraordinary importance to America

In January, President Donald Trump suspended most of military aid to Pakistan, accusing Islamabad of allowing the Taliban to use its territory for attacks in Afghanistan. Last week, the Pentagon urged Congress to allow it to use for other purpose the funds that had been set aside for Pakistan.

The re-allocation ended the possibility that the funds earmarked for Pakistan could be released if Islamabad agreed to take the required action against various terrorist groups.

But during his visit to Islamabad last week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had pressed the new Pakistani government that it was still possible to “reset” the US-Pakistan relationship if Pakistan agreed to rein in the groups reportedly operating from its soil.

Mr Bolton said Secretary Pompeo wanted to convey the message that “we hoped and expected that Pakistan would cooperate fully in the war against terrorism, which they had committed to do.”

He said terrorism was “a serious threat” to the entire subcontinent but Pakistan needed to act against terrorists because it’s also a threat to its own existence.

He said terrorism was also “a matter of extraordinary importance for the United States” and that’s why it wanted the new Pakistani government to address it.

Mr Bolton said during his visit to Islamabad, Secretary Pompeo wanted to meet Prime Minister Imran Khan but could not.

Although a journalist reminded him that Mr Khan chaired the meeting between the US and Pakistani delegations, Mr Bolton did not correct himself.

This caused some to speculate that perhaps Mr Pompeo wanted a separate meeting with the prime minister.

Dawn is becoming the next Geo and i hope they met the same faith as geo/jang is currently going through. At the end of the day it does not matter if its done lightly or heavily or somewhere in between. What mattes is that its done and not a single F was given on that day. Now they can press all they want but the fact is US lost all its cards rather hastily and now they can whine all day long about what they want, what matters is what Pakistan wants and we want to reset this relationship but according to our terms and not yours. We have all the time in the world. In the meanwhile US can continue spending billions in Afghanistan to no avail.

Right! Is this chap suggesting that Americans few millions were somehow linked to the security of Pakistani nukes? Which world these Americans live in? No wonder Pak-America ties and struggling with such outlandish views on display within American administration.

Interesting though, it seems Pompeo was looking for one to one meeting with IK which was denied.

Thats because there was nobody from the other side to tell them otherwise. Could we have expected anything from Mr.10% or Nawaz PML? This is the first time after a very long time that there is a government in Pakistan that is on the same page as its institutions and is actually working for the interest of Pakistan and not their own. US has got the message and hence their rhetoric of do more and sanctuaries of terrorism inside Pakistan are getting toned down. In fact this is the second time US has mentioned aid to some how keep it relevant because the other side did not even mentioned anything about it. It seems this has taken them by surprise.

we have been hearing this ever since Pakistan got nuclear weapons now it has been 2 decades and they are still waiting for their dream to come true.

The United States seems only to see Pakistan through the prism of Afghanistan. The main thing is we would like to be allies with the U.S. but with dignity. But what we are seeing here on same day on the plane to Pakistan, Pompeo announced his appointment of Zalmay Khalilzad, a veteran diplomat who is unpopular in Pakistan, as the new U.S. special adviser on Afghan reconciliation, which could further complicate relations with Islamabad.

U.S.A just want escape route from Afghanistan and He need scapegoat so that they can blame failure on others.
I have seen many Pakistanies saying USA wants a escape route from Afghanistan.why would usa want to leave Afghanistan a country which borders China ,Iran ,Pakistan, and Russia (near) all the countries usa would like to keep an eye on.

If peace returns to Afghanistan they have no reason to stay in Afghanistan which they can sell to American people.if you see the bigger picture it's usa which controls what's happening in Afghanistan, others just think they have some say.
