DHARAMSHALA, Dec. 27: A Chinese national suspected to be a spy was apprehended by Indian military in the north-eastern border state of Manipur a few days ago, Indian daily Times of India reported on Tuesday.
The Chinese man identified as Qin Min Xiv Xiang, 55, was held in custody near Moreh town situated along the border with Myanmar in Tengnoupal district in Manipur by Indian paramilitary force Assam Rifles, sources said.
The Chinese national is said to belong from Fuzian province of China, and possessed various Chinese, Vietnamese and Myanmarese documents, foreign currencies, a pen drive and a compass. TOI reported that suspected spy was nabbed after intelligence tip reported of a “Chinese intelligence operative agent attempting to infiltrate into India from Myanmar through a track near T Minao village,” following which, a team of Assam Rifles moved in on the intelligence detail and apprehended Xiang.
The town on Moreh on the Indian side and Tamu town on the Myanmarese side has become a crucial point in India-Myanmar relationship and is also a trade point between the two countries.
Currently, the Assam Rifles or any official authority has not given any statements on the incident other than that the Chinese national is still held by the military.
In 2013, in a similar incident, a Tibetan-origin man and suspected Chinese espionage operative Pema Tsering was arrested in McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala where the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama resides. Police at the time said that during interrogation, Tsering admitted to being an ex-member of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China and also having served in the People's Armed Police Force (PAPF).
