INDIA MIGHT HAVE SECRETLY DEVELOPED ICBM WITH 10,000 TO 16,000 KM RANGE ALREADY (SURYA ICBM)

According to a report published in The Non-proliferation Review, in the Winter of 1995, Surya (meaning the Sun in Sanskrit and many Indian languages) is the codename for the first LONG RANGE Intercontinental Ballistic Missile that India is reported to be developing.
The DRDO is believed to have begun the project in 1994. This report has not been confirmed by any other sources until 2010. Officials of the Indian government have repeatedly denied the existence of the project.
According to the report, the Surya is an intercontinental-range, surface-based, solid and liquid propellant ballistic missile. The report further adds that Surya is the most ambitious project in India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. The Surya is speculated to have a range between 10,000 to 16,000 kilometers.

In terms of payload as well it is believed that SURYA can carry 2-10 nukes depending on its weight using MIRVs. India is also believed to be developing thermonuclear weapons with a blast yield of over 1 megaton TNT equivalent.

The entire SURYA program continues to remain highly secretive. It is believed to be a three-stage design, with the first two stages using solid propellants and the third-stage using liquid.

IF WE ALREADY POSSESS THIS MISSILE THEN WHY IS OUR GOVERNMENT HIDING IT?

Well as a matter of FACT .. India needs such Missile program only if it requires to hit targets in American & West European Regions. As for China, Agni 3, 4 and 5 can cover the entire country

Both American and European Countries are Economically very important for India as they don't go well with the Chinese and can be really helpful in countering the Chinese in terms of Economical MONOPOLY!!

Hence declaration of an ICBM which can strike targets in these "High-Valued-Economic Zones" for India might bring in resistance in India's roadway to be an economical superpower by 2030 as it can create a feeling of discomfort and hostility in these nations which currently do not view India as a threat!

IF WE DON'T NEED IT THEN WHY HAVE IT ?


Well, the answer is pretty simple. .Who knows what might happen tomorrow ? Today's friends might turn out to be tomorrows Enemies and since the WEST already possesses such ICBMs which can reach India then if at all a war breaks between India and any of these countries, India should not find itself on the BACK-FOOT !! Because then, it will be either DO or DIE !!

If they have it, we should have it too.

Good relations means no need to use ever. So why worry needlessly. But its always better to be prepared for the worst.

They can already reach us? Right. So US, West cannot question or complain if we can reach them too.

I remember reading about Surya ICBM in a newspaper back in early 2000s.It said US was putting pressure on India to go slow on Surya using "carrot and stick" approach.Seems we are finally strong enough to resist both.

Well if true than India has done right thing and we need to develop long range ICBMs too

Pipe dream,,it will be agni 6 having 5500 km range with mirv's which will take another 3-4 years for test.Only after that can we think of something bigger,maybe post 2020.

Agni-5 had stated range of 5500Km. I think Agni-6 would have stated range of at least 6000Km and/or MIRV capability.

In my opinion,India should pause it's Surface missile program at 8000KM range, and divert resources towards SLBM's and BMD. A SLBM with 6000KM range is more potent than Surface launched 10,000KM range missile.

1)5500-6000 KM is just about in the same bracket.
2)SLBM is more strategic than icbm------true
3)India will pursue the 8000 km missile but without mirv's it will be costly and relatively ineffective hence it will happen after we master agni 6 with mirv's.

A missile with 5k range with 3 warheads of total 1.5 ton weight, will have how much range with a single warhead of .5 ton. Guys do the math.

Missiles are not changed like u are suggesting,everything is predetermined and a payload will remain the same for them and not decreased /increased for more/less payload.

A .5 tonnes tonnes payload is practically useless thats why it will not be used in first place on a costly icbm.

India could have 7-8000 range single warhead missile in couple of months. It could be easily achieved by reducing warhead weight size. What i was saying that even if India have capability of a true ICBM ( 10,000+ KM), it should not waste resource on that, but should try to make long range SLBM's ( and SSBN's to carry them). A 6000KM range ICBM would do more to deter USA than a 10,000 KM range ICBM.

But , and a very big but, if India's SSBN tech is immature, India may be in a situation where it would have spare talent for Ballistic missiles ( Scientists without any gainful employment in DRDO ) but not SSBN's to carry them, hence a true ICBM project could be pursued in meantime.


Arihant is a Joke. It has some deterrence value against Pakistan as it could carry 15 K-15 missiles, but has practically 0 value against China as it could carry only 4 K-4 missiles. We need proper SSBN's of 15000 tonn dispalcement rather than mini SSBN like Arihant of 6000 Tonn displacement.An Ohio class could carry 64 Tridents,compared to Arihant's 4 K-4. For that we need more powerful miniaturized Nuclear reactor as the reason that Arihant is so small is because India does not have reactors good enough for larger SSBN's. Once reactor problem is solved, SSBN's are relatively easier to construct than SSK's as they are not supposed to stealthily stalk surface ships. They could lie in some corner of Ocean, away from maritime traffic, biding their time.

Yes current arihant is not much but u cannot start building bigger vessels one fine morning out of the blue.It needs a bigger reactor than 83 mw powering arihant not to mention numerous other challenges.What u say will be realized in due course of time.
