A suicide bombing claimed by the militant Islamic State (IS) group killed at least 70 people, mainly Shia pilgrims, south of Baghdad Thursday, in the latest militant attack as Iraqi forces battle to retake Mosul.

The huge truck bomb blast ripped through a petrol station where buses packed with faithful returning from the Arbaeen commemoration in Karbala were parked, officials said.

Most of the victims were Iranians, the largest contingent of foreigners in the pilgrimage, which is one of the world's largest religious events and culminated on Monday.

The attack took place near a village called Shomali, about 120 kilometres southeast of Baghdad.

IS, which is fighting to defend its Mosul stronghold in northern Iraq, claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a statement quoted by the SITE Intelligence Group, IS said a bomber “blew up his vehicle amidst their assembly, inflicting among them more than 200 killed and wounded, including Iranians.”

Falah al-Radhi, head of the provincial security committee for Babylon, the province where the bombing happened, said it had targeted several buses.

“A large truck exploded among them. It was a suicide attack,” he told AFP.

“There are at least 70 dead, fewer than 10 are Iraqis, the rest are Iranians.”

Videos circulating on social media showed debris scattered over a large area along the main highway linking Baghdad to the main southern port city of Basra.

“There are completely charred corpses at the scene,” said Radhi, who added that at least 20 wounded were transferred to nearby hospitals.

The Joint Operations Command in Baghdad issued a statement saying the truck was packed with 500 litres of ammonium nitrate, a chemical compound used in many explosive devices.

Diversionary attacks
Up to 20 million people visited Karbala, home to the mausoleum of Hazrat Imam Hussein (RA), for Arbaeen this year. According to the Iraqi authorities, around three million of them were Iranians.

Iraq had deployed around 25,000 members of the security forces in and around the shrine city, which lies southwest of Baghdad, to protect the pilgrims from a feared IS attack.

The militant group, which is losing ground in Mosul, has carried out a series of high-profile diversionary attacks since Iraqi forces launched a huge offensive against their northern stronghold last month.

Elite forces battled IS militants in eastern Mosul Thursday, looking for fresh momentum in their five-week-old offensive to retake Iraq's second city.

Maan al-Saadi, a commander with the Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS), told AFP on the front line in Mosul that his forces were fighting IS in the neighbourhood of Al-Khadraa.

“They cannot flee. They have two choices -- give up or die,” he said.

Over the past few days, Iraqi forces have cut off the main supply line running from Mosul to the western border with Syria, where IS still controls the city of Raqqa.

The US-led coalition also bombed bridges over the Tigris river that splits Mosul in two, reducing the militants' ability to resupply the eastern front.

“The Iraqi advance on the south and southeast of the city has started to pick up some steam, which we think is a really great development,” coalition spokesman Colonel John Dorrian said.

'Brutal' fighting
“It is extraordinarily tough fighting, just brutal, but there is an inevitability to it. The Iraqis are going to beat them,” he told AFP.

IS fighters moving in an intricate network of tunnels have used snipers, booby traps and a seemingly endless supply of suicide car bombers to stop Iraqi forces.

The authorities have not released casualty figures since the start of the offensive but fighters have admitted being surprised by how fierce IS resistance has been.

Iraqi forces launched a major offensive on October 17 to retake Mosul, where militant supremo Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed a caliphate in 2014.

They are also edging towards the city from a northern front as well as from the south, where they are within striking distance of Mosul airport.

Among the forces deployed south and west of the city are the Hashed al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilisation), an umbrella for paramilitaries dominated by Tehran-backed militias.

They have focused their operations on Tal Afar, a large town still held by IS west of Mosul and on Wednesday announced they had cut the main road between it and Syria.

That will make it very long and dangerous for IS if it attempts to move fighters and equipment between Mosul and Raqa, the last two bastions of their crumbling “state”.

The International Organisation for Migration said Thursday that around 76,000 people had been displaced since October 17.

It said that about 7,000 people had already returned to their homes, leaving roughly 69,000 still displaced, most of them in camps.

Suicide truck bomb kills about 100 in Iraq, mostly Iranian pilgrims

A suicide truck bomb killed about 100 people, most of them Iranian Shi'ite pilgrims, at a petrol station in the city of Hilla 100 km (62 miles) south of Baghdad on Thursday, police and medical sources said.

Islamic State, the ultra hard-line Sunni militant group that considers all Shi'ites to be apostates, claimed responsibility the attack in an online statement.

The group also is fighting off a U.S.-backed offensive on its stronghold Mosul, in northern Iraq, in which Iranian-trained Shi'ite militias are taking part.

The pilgrims were en route back to Iran from the Iraqi Shi'ite holy city of Kerbala, where they had commemorated Arbaeen, the 40th day of mourning for the killing of Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Mohammad, in the 7th century AD, the medical sources said.

The gas station has a restaurant on its premises that is popular with travelers. Five pilgrim buses were set afire by the blast from the explosives-laden truck, a police official said.

In recent months Islamic State has intensified attacks in areas out of its control in efforts to weaken the offensive launched on Oct. 17 to retake Mosul, the last major Iraqi city under Islamic State control.

Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the attack without giving a casualty toll. Tehran will continue to support Iraq's "relentless fight against terrorism," ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency.

U.S. officials condemned the attack.

"The United States remains steadfast in its partnership with the Iraqi people and government and this attack only serves to strengthen our resolve in defeating ISIL," National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.

The U.S. State Department is in close contact with Iraqi authorities, department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

Please stop saying "killing each other". All of these attacks are one-sided terrorist attacks by these animals. There is no two sided "killing each other", it's just one side hell bent of killing and eradicating Shias from planet earth, which they have failed miserably.

On a request of a mullah, i would like to shed some light on these terrorist attacks.

ISIS was created by the regime in Iran, therefore has not conducted any attack in Iran, but anywhere in the world; Also, they have many cells in the world, but not in Iran. You may wonder how ISIS has those cells around the world, here is some clue:

''
In a recent Friday prayers sermon in Tehran, the Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, promised that if America attacked Iran, Iran would respond by causing 10 times as much destruction to America as it had caused to Iran. Others in the regime have been more specific.

As I reported last June, Brig. Gen. Mohammad-Reza Naghdi, during a gathering of high-ranking members of the Revolutionary Guards command and the Basij militia, announced that Iranian assets have successfully infiltrated deep within the West, from Europe to New York. ''

We muslims should be ashamed of ourselves. Killing our own people so brutally. Thanks America for Afghan "Jihad" and creating the terrorists present in the world today. When they were fighting Soviets it was justified. When fighting America it is terrorism. The countries that interfered in Afghanistan on American insistence in 1980's should be ashamed of themselves.

If Sunnis converted to the more superior sect of Shiism there would be less terror in the world, Sunnism is infected with cancer, they should treat the virus or kill/leave the sect.

Yes, Shia Islam is so superior that less than 10% of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims follow it. There is no infection in Islam whatsoever. What we are witnessing is purely a power struggle between two parties in Iraq that has been on and off (actively and less actively at times) since Iraq was created. We see the same in Syria where there is a power struggle between two groups of peoples and their local and regional allies. Those groups of people were killing each other long before any ISIS existed. At a much higher rate in fact (Saddam, Hafiz etc.).

If we are talking about killing and destruction I believe that the Shia Al-Assad dynasty/regime and its allies (Iranian Mullah's, Russia, Hezbollah, Iraq etc.) have killed many, many more people than ISIS has. However it is not "politically correct" to mention such a fact.

Anyway a few Iraqi Shia Arab Islamists on Twitter where bragging about how secure Arba'een is, yet each year there are attacks. Fail.

I have seen an isis video in which they said they will kill all the shias in the world first then go on to kill all other non believers. Thats 200 million people.
Barberic fanatics.

1/4 of the world's Shias live in India if not more and at least half of them claim Arab ancestry, lol. However in reality they are low caste converts.

This campaign of terror isn't limited to Iraq, it exists in every state with a Muslim majority when the slightest opportunity for rebellion is made available. Whenever a Muslim state experiences a regime transition/chaos/war (such as Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq, Algeria in the 90's, Egypt (Sinai), Waziristan etc.) These terror groups pop up and start massacring innocent people under the same banner and ideology. This isn't a Sunni vs Shia war it's an inter Sunni conflict, Shias happen to be a large victim of that conflict given that IS banks on support with their extreme hostility towards Shias.

SAA/Syrian air force have acted many times times without regard for the civillians obviously, this is not denied. GCC air forces haven't exactly been careful in Yemen either, seems like Iraq's war on IS has been a lot cleaner. These same monkeys killed dozens of Egyptian troops in Egypt a day or 2 ago, an inter Sunni conflict as I said. One major reason they managed to succeed in Iraq is because they banked on the anti Shia stuff which many Sunnis hate, hatred isn't good yet they live on it.

I as a Sunni sided with the Rafida in Iraq against the brave 'Sunni' protestors, seems like I was right. The same people of Anbar that protested in 2013 are crying now having been destroyed by IS, they should've supported the Rafida like I did.

Syria and Iraq are connected. Afghanistan and Pakistani (Waziristan) is connected and a legacy of the Soviet invasion and later US invasion of Afghanistan. An invasion (Soviet one) that itself killed 10 times as many people (directly or indirectly) as terror has in that region of the world. Just to put things in perspective. Here the Soviet Union should be blamed for destroying an entire country and generation. Same story in Iraq due to the US invasion. In Syria as well Hafiz murdered at least 100.000 Syrians in the 1980's whose sole crime was that they wanted a society where Islam plays a bigger role and not live in a dictatorship. Today his son is mass-murdering Syrians in order to stay in power.

Sinai is a new phenomenon where less than 1500 people have been killed and it is related to the emergence of ISIS but in reality it is due to economic/social reasons and for Sinai being largely forgotten by Cairo. In fact that is the common ground in most of such conflicts. Same story in Waziristan and Taliban-held areas of Afghanistan.

Algeria was a civil war where both parties committed crimes. In fact the Algerian military regime removed the democratically elected ISF.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algerian_local_elections,_1990

In Yemen less than 3500 civilians have died and according to the UN 50% of them are due to GCC/Arab coalition bombardments. Those are not outrageous numbers in a 1.5 year long conflict waged in densely populated and heavily mountainous areas and where the enemy hides among civilians.

However it is entirely different in Syria where Al-Assad is systematically bombing/killing civilians deliberately. Yesterday he attacked two women hospitals in Idlib alone. Each day he does this several times a day. Not any different from ISIS at all only the scale being larger. So nobody here should take those who cry about ISIS but who support Al-Assad and his allies in the region, seriously.

You are talking as if there are no sectarian people among Shias. There are (percentage wise) just as many if not more. Their entire religion is made due to demonizing certain Muslim personalities (mostly respected and close to Prophet Muhammad (saws). I see no such thing in Sunni Islam. Their entire sect is essentially about victimhood. Hence their 100 mourning days each year. They have made a mockery out of Islam. That channel I posted recently (run by Persian Sunnis) exposes their LEADING scholars and their non-Islamic nonsense. Then no wonder that the average Shia (mostly uneducated) behave like they do on many fronts.

Even Nasrallah (himself a terrorist) has spoken about this openly, lol. Then you know it is bad.

Recently they worshipped a Saudi Arabian (Hijazi) Wahhabi (Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra) would be considered by them as a Wahhabi if he lived today without a single doubt) while they are obsessed about his ancestral peoples, descendants and land that they themselves partially if not mostly descend from as well.

So essentially crying about terrorism = supports the biggest terrorist currently (Al-Assad) and his allies. Cries about "hatred" aimed at Shias, supports people who kill many more Sunnis than terrorists kill Shias. Then they wonder that most people nowadays dislike them/distrust them and the regimes/persons that those same people worship as saints (an important part of their religion btw).
