Two suicide bombers struck a church in Pakistan overnight, killing nine people and wounding more than 50 others, in the first attack on a church claimed by the country's Islamic State group affiliate.

Hundreds of worshippers were attending services ahead of Christmas when the bombers appeared in the city of Quetta and clashed with security forces. One assailant was killed at the church entrance. The other made it inside, said Sarfaraz Bugti, home minister for the southwestern Baluchistan province.

Baluchistan Police Chief Moazzam Ansari praised the response of security forces guarding the church, saying the attacker who made it inside was wounded and unable to reach the main building.

"Otherwise the loss of lives could have been much higher," he told reporters.

Quetta Police Chief Abdur Razzaq Cheema said a search was underway for two suspected accomplices who escaped.

Local television showed ambulances and security patrols racing to the scene as women and children were being led out of the church's main gate.

The Islamic State group later claimed responsibility for the attack on their Aamaq news agency, saying two "plungers" from their group had stormed the church, without providing further details.

It was the first time the Islamic State group has claimed an attack on a church in Pakistan, though Muslim extremists have claimed church attacks in the past. The deadliest example was in September 2013, when twin suicide bomb blasts killed 85 people in a Peshawar church. In March 2015, two suicide bombers attacked two churches in the eastern city of Lahore, killing 15 people.

Fifty-seven people were wounded in the latest attack, including seven who were listed in critical condition, according to Wasim Baig, a spokesman for Quetta's main hospital.

A young girl in a white dress sobbed as she recounted the attack to Geo television, saying many people around her were wounded.

Aqil Anjum, who was shot in his right arm, told The Associated Press he heard a blast in the middle of the service, followed by heavy gunfire.

"It was chaos. Bullets were hitting people inside the closed hall," he said.

Dozens of Christians gathered outside a nearby hospital to protest the lack of security. Pakistan's president and other senior officials condemned the attack.

This attack proves. We need to buy more ships for Pakistan Navy. We need to increase size of the Marines. We need to buy more tanks.

.
Indeed an evil act to kill innocents. May the murderers go to hell for murder.

we were one of the worse Terror Effected Countries and there is a significant decrease in terror related incidents in Pakistan but no country can remove terrorism of that magnitude on their own, France, USA , UK , India , Spain , Germany , Denmark , Russia ? the Terror act is shameless but instead of Questioning the Tolerance of Pakistani's , one should do something to stop these meaningless wars .

With due respect, Americans doing the same, so whats wrong if Pak does it.

Americans are only pointing out the risks being faced by Pakistan as a result of groups that continue to find havens within Pakistan, that is all. Of course, it is up to Pakistan to heed or ignore such risks.

Tell us, exactly how many Americans ran into the path of bullets last year, please if you will?

We appreciate the concerns, and if Pakistan is not taking heed and do not want to work on / eliminate the risks pointed by good Americans, its Pakistan's lose. Why America need to blame, threaten and all topi drama. All risks are being faced by Pakistan, let it suffer and secure your area of responsibility. Do not allow any cross border activity in/out, and clear Afghanistan.

Exactly. Pakistan should follow policies that serve its national interests. However, the evidence seems to suggest that it may be failing to do so for some reason. Groups within its territories may pose increasing risks to its own integrity, and only Pakistan has the sovereign authority to do what needs to be done within its own borders. Whatever cross-border infiltration may or may not occur is also a byproduct of securing its own borders as a sovereign nation. Blaming others for its porous orders will not work in securing its citizens.

Pakistan is doing its best. but it seems like Afghanistan and Defender of Afghanistan (USA) is more worried of this porous border, hence broken record of "Do more" keep playing. So same logic applies and as a sovereign country Afghanistan with the help of Mighty USA secure its side, do not blame Pakistan for your inability to secure known porous border, take care of your side or the border, both countries share the border, why blame one. USA and Afghanistan also need to eliminate terrorist within Afghanistan which are threat to whole world, but looks like under USA protective umbrella, terrorists are thriving and more groups coming to establish, but USA, NATO fail to deal with anything. But blame Pakistan.
