INS Vela, the Navy's oldest submarine, will be decommissioned here at a ceremony to be held during sunset on Friday.
INS Vela has completed 37 years of service and is the oldest unit in the Navy, probably the oldest submarine in the world, according to an Eastern Naval Command press release issued here on Wednesday.
The submarine was commissioned Rear Admiral (retired) J.M.S. Sodhi at Riga in Latvia of the erstwhile Soviet Union, on August 31, 1973.
It was first of the Vela class of submarines to be commissioned into the Navy.
The submarine was commanded by 26 Commanding Officers in all these years during its 37 years of service.
