Subhash Kumar Shan, a top-ranking Hizbul Mujahideen commander known to be a big motivating factor for the outfit, was killed in an encounter with the security forces July 2011.
A Hindu militant commander, who had been fighting alongside Muslim jihadis for 10 years, has been killed by the security forces in a fierce encounter at Gokund area of Renie Nallah in Kashtiwar district of Jammu region.
Subhash Kumar Shan alias Kamran alias Wasif of Razna-Palmar village was the deputy divisional commander of Hizbul Mujhadeen and was operating in Palmar-Dachhan and Marwah areas since 2001.
“Based on specific information about the presence of HM terrorists in Gokund area of Renie Nallah, the police and the army launched a search in the area on July 26. On noticing the movement of the forces, ultras fired upon the search party which was effectively retaliated and as a result one terrorist identified as Subash Kumar Shan was killed,” said BS Tuti, SSP, Kashtiwar.
Tuti said Subhash was named in seven FIRs, including five murder cases.
“He was also involved in the killing of three security force personnel and three civilians,” he said.
Subhash alias Wasif joined HM in July 2001 and was currently deputy divisional commander of HM, operating in Palmar-Dachhan and Marwah areas.
“He was second in command to Jahangir, the top commander in Kashtiwar. He lives in the area where there is mixed population. He had some Muslim friends who became militants and Subhash too was motivated and he joined their ranks,” said Tuti.
The police said his killing is a big boost for the security forces and a big blow to the terrorist organization.
“He was a great motivator and on his motivation two more individuals Mohammad Shafi and Reyaz Ahmed of Marwah joined HM ranks recently and are presently active in Marwah area. Wasif was presently busy in recruiting new terrorists from Marwah and Dachhan area and his killing will certainly stop recruitment of new entrants into HM outfit,” he said.
It is not the first time a Hindu militant has been killed in Jammu and Kashmir.
In August 2005, the army killed Anar Singh, a Hindu special police official-turned-militant in Tengali village in Kashtiwar. In the same year two Hindu militants surrendered before the army in Jammu and the preceding year two others had dropped their guns before the security forces. In 2006, security forces killed Kuldeep Kumar Sharma alias KK alias Kamran, the deputy district commander of Hizb-ul-Mujhadeen for Doda.
Sources said money, power and bravado had been driving some Hindu youth to join the militant ranks in Jammu and Kashmir. Confidential documents revealed that over a dozen Hindu militants were active in different parts of Jammu region of which some have been killed.
