Strange Syrian Bedfellows: US, Russia Coordinate Attack Against Militants From Turkey

Turkey has already made it clear that it will not honor the Syria ceasefire (which includes nearly 100 groups) if it feels its security is "threatened". This is code for "we reserve the right to continue attacking the Syrian Kurds." And not surprisingly, that's exactly what Ankara has foolishly decided to do. Using the tried and true tactic of "look the other way as 'ISIS' crosses our border", Ankara launched an attack on the Kurdish-held border town of Tel Abyad:

The Russian ceasefire monitoring center near Latakia says it is verifying reports of an attack on the Kurdish town Tell Abyad in northern Syria carried out by militants coming from Turkey.
The reports came overnight and claim that the forces coming from Turkey are using heavy artillery, according to Lt. Gen. Sergey Kuralenko, who heads the center for Syrian reconciliation.

“This information was verified though multiple channels, including representatives of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), [a rebel alliance that includes Kurds, Arabs and other ethnic groups and operates in the region],” he said.

The US, which is allied with many of the Kurdish forces in Syria, pounded the Turkish-backed militants with airstrikes:

Islamic State militants launched an assault on a Kurdish-controlled town on Syria's border with Turkey on Saturday, prompting air strikes by the U.S.-led coalition to try to drive them back.

The hardline Sunni fighters attacked Tel Abyad, which is controlled by the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia, and the nearby town of Suluk in the early hours of Saturday, YPG spokesman Redur Xelil and Turkish security sources told Reuters.

Here's a map of the battlefield. The blue bombs represent US airstrikes against the militants that crossed the border from Turkey.

The US airstrikes might have actually come at the urging of Russia. As SkyNews reports:

[T]he northern Syrian town of Tel Abyad has come under attack from Turkish territory.

Russia contacted the US co-ordination centre in Amman, which is monitoring the break in fighting, after the attack was recorded by the Russian co-ordination centre in Syria, the Interfax news agency reported.

Is this real life? Is the US teaming up with Russia to fight Turkey?

:enjoy:

Hey wait...you can't post this...remember the US according to the PDF conspiracy base is only supporting ISIS. If you go and say we are fighting on the same side as Russia you are going to cause an uproar and a lot of confusion.

Please do not post threads that go counter to the US-ISIS conspiracy.

Russia has quietly sidelines iran after the oil deal with Saudis and is now in the US camp against Assad without announcement! Assad will regret giving Syria to Russians as the Russian will hammer the last nail in his coffin..its very much like the Germany and Soviet Union in WW2.

Let's put it in slightly different way: the US is moving closer (has moved, in fact) to the Russian side. Russian policy in regards to Syria has not changed. The US policy on the other hand... I lost the count of the turns...

Assad will be just finer.

US suffers from weak leadership. Maybe it is due to intense in fighting among hard-liners and soft-liners inside the US government.

I don't think the US policy has changed. It's just suddenly people here may start taking off their ISIS blinders. Please put them back on.

.
It's funny for some people making a big fuzz out of this. US Have ALWAYS been fighting ISIS. The world have doubted the Russian effort, and if Russia are indeed fighting against ISIS, this news should came out a few month ago when they start sending bomber in Syria.

Most people disagree with you. US supported lots of terrorist groups with beards slightly shorter than those of ISIS fighters.

But Mr. Putin finally said "enough us enough." Mr. Obama had to comply and I commend it.

ha,poor turkey.
they will pay for supporting ISIS.

I do not how much for they can pay for than they have already done.

I just wish stability to return to the region. Turkey has been destroying regional dynamics way too recklessly and in the process using up all the political capital it collected over the decades.

I do not know how could the lost credibility be retrieved.

Guys, guys.. Chill out..
First of all, Russia keeps running its propaganda via Putin-media after bitch-slapped by our F-16s... Pathetic acts by so called supapowa.

Turkey has already made it clear that it will not honor the Syria ceasefire (which includes nearly 100 groups) if it feels its security is "threatened". This is code for "we reserve the right to continue attacking the Syrian Kurds."

As Turkey is not one of the sides of ceasefire rules of agreement is not legally binding for us. If Turkey feels threat of course she has right to prevent it. This is what every country could do. There is nothing more normal than this.

1- It's not an international monitoring center but just a tool to legitimize Russian acts in Syria. So we don't give a sh!t about it.
2- If Russia sees that militants coming from Turkey why they didn't stop it? They are freely flying their birds on Syria.
3- Turkey rejects the claims openly. Russia has nothing to prove them ( as every single claim ).
4- It's Daesh who attacked Al-Abyad that confirmed already.

Islamic State militants launched an assault on a Kurdish-controlled town on Syria's border with Turkey on Saturday, prompting air strikes by the U.S.-led coalition to try to drive them back.

Turkey and US have agreed on preventing illegal crossings from Syrian border. US jets are already using Adana/Incirlik air base of Turkey and our UAVs collecting data 7/24 from the borderline. According to these; If Turkey backs and want militants cross the border;

1- Why Turkey and US have an agreement about borderline control?
2- Why Turkey share intel with US-led coalition about this?
3- And why let US bomb them?

Is this real life? Is the US teaming up with Russia to fight Turkey?

There is no such world that Russia and US will back each other and have common benefits from the same thing.

Sputnik etc..

Is it not ironic that Putin's media started propaganda war against Turkey after the humiliation? These media networks can tell you good stories but can't prove you any single sh!t :)

I just wish stability to return to the region. Turkey has been destroying regional dynamics way too recklessly

Oh yeah everything was perfect in the ME and Turkey ruined it :D

Erdogan Steps up Proxy War Against US, Uncle Sam Finally Hits Back

Finally it has happened. Finally Erdogan has pushed the envelope so far that Washington not only stood its ground but pounded his assets into minced meat. As we reported this Saturday ISIS militants made a push for the Kurdish held town of Tel Abyad on the Syrian-Turkish border from Turkish territory.

And it's not us saying these guys are ISIS, it's Reuters, the anti-Assad Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, and Sky News.

In other words Erdogan had staged its own Bay of Pigs style invasion of Syria – but using ISIS as its Cuban exiles. This was too much even for the United States (or at least the Pentagon) which promptly dispatched planes to back the Kurds.

Tell Abyad (yellow icon) is nowhere near ISIS' access to Turkey

Firstly, we should take a moment to truly comprehend and appreciate the level of Ankara's cynicism here. Tell Abyad is nearly 100 kilometres away from the nearest ISIS-held crossing on the Syrian-Turkish border at Jarabulus. There is simply no way ISIS could have covered this distance without the cooperation of Turkey. Indeed, if Russians are to be believed Turkey had no intention of even pretending it wasn't behind the offensive but actually openly backed it with its artillery.

What an insane sight: artillery of NATO member Turkey and ISIS suicide car bombers working in tandem to soften up the enemy.

That enemy being the Kurdish-dominated SDF which brings us to our second point; the quick and no nonsense reaction of the US. Erdogan's frustration with the US refusal to cut ties with the Kurds is understandable. As is his anger at the Kurds' increasingly sealing the Turkish-Syrian border and reducing his influence on the Syrian war. However, it is unclear what he thought he could accomplish in this instance.

US had been willing to accommodate Erdogan and back off of its support for the Kurds in north-western Syria where there is a hodge-podge of various different factions and where the US is also pursuing its Syria regime change war and looking benevolently on Turkish-backed jihadis who may accomplish that.

However, in the north-eastern Syria, where ISIS and the Kurds are the only game in town, the US support for Kurdish militiamen has always been absolute. YPG captured Tell Abyad in 2014 with US air cover in the first place. Turkey may have its red lines in the west, but here it's the US which draws its own red lines – Erdogan crossed one and his proxies paid the price.

As a final point, where is the western mainstream media on this? President of NATO member Turkey has just organized his own merry little troupe of ISIS head choppers and sent them to invade a neighboring state from his territory.

None of this is in dispute or controversial – it's western reporting which is saying the invasion force was ISIS and struck from Turkey. So then where is the outrage? Where are the condemnations? Where are the calls for Turkey to finally be brought into line?

Or is that only reserved for Russia?

they are already crazy
they dream to get back to the ottoman time and they even do not know they do not have that power and ottoman empire is actually a weak country.
they think they can build the Pan-Turkism state.
they are like a moth to the flame.

.
Turkey = ISIS

It's so pathetic and hypocritical that Turkey complains that US is not a true ally, but how about Turkey stabbing in your allies back by supporting ISIS, which has sworn to destroy west, simply as long as ISIS are killing Kurds in addition to other genocide.

Remember last year, the ISIS siege against Kobani, Turks tanks just sit idly while US airplanes pounding ISIS. Do you call that an ally?

.
Lol look at the Chinese trolls, they have no clue what they are talking about, just mixing random terms that they heard somethere together which arent even compatible with eachother such as Pan-Turkism and Ottoman empire in the same phrase.

Oh boy, at least do your research before humiliating yourselves, you dont sound smart, neither do your posts sound substantive to people with knowledge, or even better just stop polluting the forum with your nonsense. :disagree:

Damn, Turkey must be one hell of a Country according to you. Fighting Russia/Iran/USA at the same time. While doing this we have also aggrevated Chinese internet warriors for some unkown strange reasons? So we take head on all the world powers simoultanously? :D Such a shame we are only 78 million population. Think what would have happened if we were 1,5 billion. Ah there is a country with 1,5 billion, but they are the sweatshop of the world, such pity
