The Shopian rape and murder case is the alleged abduction, rape and murder of two young women in mysterious circumstances between 29 and 30 May 2009 at Bongam, Shopian district in the Indian administered state of Jammu and Kashmir. Two women who were sisters-in-law went missing from their orchard on the way home on 29 May 2009.
Little more than 12 hours later their battered bodies were found in the stream both one kilometer apart. Asiya had been badly beaten. Blood streamed from her nose and a sharp gash in her forehead. She and sister-in-law, Nilofar, had been gang raped before their deaths.
Victims
Nilofar Jan, age 22, wife of Shakeel Ahmed Ahangar and mother of two-year-old son Suzzane. Asiya Jan, age 17, daughter of Abdul Gani Ahangar. She had secured distinction in her matriculation exams in previous year and was a pre-medical student of New Greenland Higher Senior Secondary School in Alialpora, Shopian. Neelofar was Aasiya’s sister-in-law and both were residens of Bongam in Shopian.
Aasiya & Nilofar
“We were gang raped by Indian army and those who protested against our rape & murder were also killed, and the girl raped in Delhi is in headlines everywhere but we were not even in the news brief.”
“We ask the so called world’s largest democracy is a girl of Delhi a girl and girls of Kashmir just a mere body of flesh who anyone can tear?”
“Is this your democracy?”
“One of us were pregnant during but your media didn’t even bothered to flash this news?
We were not only raped but killed also. You could not give us justice but surely the justice of hereafter is better than your so called democratic justice, there you cannot hide your deeds.”
“India says Kashmir is a free part of a free country,” said Majid Khan, a 20-year-old unemployed man who has joined the stone-throwing mobs. “If that is so, why are we being brutalized? Why are women gang raped?”
