WASHINGTON (ABC7) — How does a restaurant keep its doors open while serving free meals to the poor and homeless day in and day out?

It's a question Kazi Mannan, owner of Sakina Halal Grill, asks himself every single day. "That question, I ask God every day. How do I keep my business open, growing and making profit?"

Sakina Halal Grill looks like your typical high-end restaurant located just blocks from the White House. During the lunchtime rush hour, many customers flock to the grill for the all you can eat buffet of authentic Pakistani Indian food.

However, it's anything but just another restaurant.

Beyond the delicious flavors you find, the warm Chai Latte or fresh lemon water, you would never know that homeless people are walking in and out to experience the same thing paying customers are.

"If someone says I need a free meal, OK," Mannan said. He doesn't ask questions and never judges anybody. His policy has remained the same for the last five years. If you're hungry, poor or homeless, you eat for free. In 2018, he estimates they served over 16,000 free meals.

Probably typical Pakistani hiding behind 'brand halal. I mean it would not have killed him to call it Sakina Pakistani Grill and thus accorded some positive atribute to his country of orgin helping to garner some soft image. But no way ...

Apparently the owner is a Pakistani and I feel your sentiment and if I was him I certainly would attribute these values to Pakistan.

However, he can call his restaurant whatever he wants to; nothing to do with you or me and not his job to try and put a positive shine on Pakistan if he does not want to.

Perhaps why not have Pakistan put a positive shine on Pakistan by doing some positive things for a change and be in the news for creation and development rather than for corruption and criminality!!!!

and again I am gonna contradict myself here, western media never picks up anything positive about Pakistan so we never hear about it which in turn effects the expats who slowly start to feel that there is nothing positive about the home country, so the spiral begins.

then the expat goes home and sees the beggars at the airport who want sterling and dollars not rupees, the unruly traffic, the mess and mountain of plastic bags hanging of trees and all over the road, the congested housing that have no planning or rhyme or reason for their designs. Get home and then there is load shedding, water shedding, the water is contaminated, the gas is missing and the food prices are sky high. The meat seller hangs his meat in the sun and flies cover each portion and he wonders what the heck, why can't anyone sort this out and this country will never change and will forever be in a mess. His relatives then robbed him blind and had then gets dropped to the airport and firstly has to bribe one official after another who openly ask for money or have the bags checked and delayed.

Goes back to Washington, thanks the Lord for his good luck, not feeling too proud of his poor home country and nothing positive about it in the media and he starts to give food to the needy and does not worry too much about shining some of that decency to his home country.

Apparently the owner is a Pakistani
If we are of Pakistani extraction or migrant from Pakistan we have obligation to act as ambassador for Pakistan. If this same guy blew himself up in Times Square Pakistan would get negative publicity in the media. The name Pakistan would come up, again and again. Indians would latch on to this and call us 'terrorists. Me, you and others would feel it.

The other side of the coin is if any of us do something positive can we please brand it as 'Pakistani'.

I welcome that sentiment, we should do this and we should proudly call ourselves Pakistani and expose Pakistan's good side too. As an example I showed a colleague 'Call and The Drummer of Pakistan' and his perspective is totally different now, whereas before his idea was that Pakistan is a hill billy country where people barely live and is nothing but a barren wasteland full of Mullahs. Now he can't believe that this is Pakistan and the amount of talent in that country. All we need is for people to be given the chance, equal opportunities for all people and to crush corruption and the sad derisive me me and my tribe mentality.

You know we need to do something about 'Brand Pakistan'. Instead of talking try to bring change. Now is the right time. Left, right, religious, secular, Sindhi, Hazara, Urdu speaking, Pashto speaking, Punjab or Azad Kashmir, male or female, Shia or Sunni, Sikh or Christian we need all to join in getting 'Brand Pakistan' moving.

Are we seeing a vanguard of neo-Indus Nationalism oh boy if it is that"s great, But seriously IK needs a hired team of PR officials and Diplomats to carry out this potential "Branding of Pakistan" we cant have a one man show with grand speeches I would say a shakeup in the MFA and Information Ministry needs to happen ASAP and ISPR should impart some of their skills as well to the MFA

@ghazi52 etc

they're doing too much for the people. business is business... if the poor white house cant afford to feed its beloved people..tough... they can apply for asylum to pakistan, subject to standard vetting procedure.

dumb *** p@kistanis... on one hand they get humiliated day in and day out by the US and on the other they try doing the 'good thing' and 'turn the other cheek' eff them and throw the slave-master mentality out the window with their flag (and false flags). cheapo muricans.
