Stop interfering in internal issues, Dhaka tells Islamabad

After Pakistan expressed concern over the dismissal of Jamaat chief Motiur Rahman Nizami's review plea against death sentence in war crimes trial, Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam urges the country not to interfere in Bangladesh’s internal affairs. File photo shows the minister addressing a press conference in Dhaka.

Bangladesh has asked Pakistan not to interfere in its internal affairs, like trial for crimes against humanity.

Besides, the country has also asked Pakistan “to stop misinterpreting” the 1974 tripartite agreement signed by Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam made the statement today reacting to Pakistan’s expression of concern over the dismissal of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami's review plea against death sentence awarded to him for the war crimes he committed in 1971.

“We are disappointed with Pakistan’s reaction. We never welcome anyone interfering in our internal issues,” the state minister said.

“Despite repeated reminders, they are still doing it. They keep saying they are saddened by the verdict. But those being tried are Bangladeshi citizens after all,” Alam added.

According to the 1974 tripartite agreement, it was agreed that the 195 Pakistani war criminals who were repatriated to Pakistan would be given immunity, but it was not mentioned anywhere in the agreement that the Bangladesh nationals who were involved in war crimes would not be tried, he further said.

The state minister said the war criminals had conducted their atrocities against humanity on behalf of Pakistan. So, it hurts Pakistan as they are being tried now, he added.

“I find this a serious issue, as these war criminals are trying to assure their future generation with the notion that Pakistan as a state will be by their sides. Otherwise, why would Pakistan be so saddened by Nizami’s death penalty?” the state minister said.

A statement issued by Pakistan foreign ministry on Friday read, “We are concerned over Bangladesh Supreme Court verdict that rejected Jamaat-e-Islami leader Motiur Rahman Nizami’s petition to review his death penalty.” The statement also termed the trial “controversial”.

The statement also read that they are following the reactions of international communities and human rights organisations over the war crimes trial.

The SC on May 5, 2016 dismissed Nizami’s petition to review his death penalty handed down to him for the war crimes conducted during Liberation War in 1971.

It's not Bangladesh's internal matter. Mujib ur Rehman signed agreement with Pakistan and India that there will be no such prosecutions. In return Pakistan recognised Bangladesh as state. Current government of BD is violating an international agreement with us. Matter is not internal.

bd is overreacting... as they do :)

I think the agreement was not to pursue HR violation of pak troops and give them safe passage. Not sure though.

Agreement was that Bangladesh will not prosecute or penalise anyone who supported Pakistan in the war and civil war. It was aimed at providing protection from witch hunting and helping Bangladeshi society to reconcile and heal from civil war. It was hoped that by doing so, Bangladesh will be able to move forward and put the violent past behind. Agreement was signed by Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. For the most part it was respected. That is why no prosecution occurred for so many years. Now SH is violating an agreement that his father signed. Pakistan has every right to raise the issue if an agreement is breached. It is NOT Bangladesh's internal matter. Nations are supposed to honour their agreements. In the end, it is the Bangladesh's citizens who are being hanged to gain political mileage. It will just sow hatred and dissent in society.

have you got any text regarding not pursuing their own people. These are bd citizen not pakistani. 1974 agreement talks mostly about PoWs, the forgiveness was sought for those 195 pakistanis. I know its not in the spirit of the agreement to pursue bd citizens.

They were Pakistani citizens at the time of war.

I don't have the exact text. No prosecution under Mujib and since then consecutive governments including Haseena's own should tell you that such agreement was in place.

.
Typical over reaction. Bangladeshis over react like most South East Asians and they have mob mentality.

.
1. If Pakistan has problem they can take them all.
2. If there was any international agreement as such to not try them, BD isnt inclined to follow that, we have least to do with Pakistan.
3. People cant go anymore with crimes, this land became worst for this sort of practice.
4. In a sovereign country they didnt respect BD constitution or BD and tried everything to reestablish Pakistan again by harming Bengalis every way, it gives reason to believe that they are working as external element.
5. Every people who has this mentality will be KIA in a stealth manner.

Civilised governments honour their agreements. But then again we are talking about Sheikh Haseena and Modi here....so nevermind!

Only Indians and BDis knows the civilized nature of Pakistanis .After all what they had done in BD in 1971 was the brightest example of civilized nature.
Perhaps Hasina might decided that it would be enough for Pakistanis .

What Bangladesh do with its own citizens who are convicted as a war criminal in one of the most heinous genocides in the history of the free world is totally an internal matter of the the People's Republic of Bangladesh and none has a right to Interfere.

Took me some time to make sense of what you have typed.

Agreement was signed well after 1971. Anything that happened in 1971 does not void a later agreement. It was agreed by Sheikh Mujeeb. Apparently his daughter has no respect for him.

No, it is not Bangladesh's internal matter. Read the discussion above.
