Tuticorin/Chennai, May 22

Nine people were killed when protests for the closure of Vedanta's Sterlite Copper unit in Tuticorin over pollution concerns turned violent on Tuesday, reports said.

Hurling stones and setting government vehicles and public property on fire, the agitators went on the rampage in the town, about 600 km from Tamil Nadu capital Chennai.

Police said nearly 5,000 protesters gathered near a local church and insisted on being allowed to hold a protest march the district collector’s office after they were denied permission to hold a rally at the copper smelter plant.

Initial pushing and shoving soon led to violent clashes, as protesters began hurling stones at police and overturned a vehicle. Security personnel used batons and burst teargas shells to break up the protest.

Many were injured in stone pelting. Protesters also set some vehicles on fire, and vandalised government cars were smashed and banks.

As the violence spiralled, police opened fire, killing a man. Reports said nine people were killed in the protests.

Meanwhile, a state minister said though the government appreciated the sentiments of the protesters, police firing had become "unavoidable".

"Entering the collector's office and (perpetrating) violence is not acceptable. Firing became an unavoidable," Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar told reporters in Chennai.

He said Chief Minister K Palaniswami was "concerned " over Tuesday's incidents and discussed the matter with officials.

Reinforcements have been rushed from neighbouring districts to Tuticorin to assist the local administration in restoring normalcy.

Some senior officials have also been despatched from Chennai to the strife-torn town to assess the situation and take measures to restore calm, sources said.

TV visuals showed buildings and vehicles being set ablaze, as protests threw normal life out of gear.

DMK Working President MK Stalin condemned the police action, saying the state government should have sorted out the issue earlier through talks with the protesters.

"Since the government did not take any steps in this regard, the people launched today's massive rally. Police attacked people indiscriminately and opened fire on them which is condemnable," Stalin, also the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, told reporters in Chennai.

MDMK founder Vaiko, who led many anti-Sterlite protests, denounced police action, calling it "condemnable", and flaying the AIADMK government for it.

Opposition PMK, DMDK and MNM, besides Dravidar Kazhagam also criticised the government for police action.

Following a Madras High Court directive, the district authorities had issued prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC, barring assembly of more than four people in and around the Sterlite plant.

Meanwhile, a peaceful demonstration was also held near the old bus stand in Tuticorin, demanding the closure of the Sterlite unit and against its proposed expansion.

Several shops in Tuticorin, besides Srivaikundam and Oddapidaram remained shut in support of the protest, police said.

Locals have alleged that the plant was polluting ground water in their area.

Nearly 3,000 police personnel have been deployed under four Additional Superintendents of Police and 13 Deputy SPs to bring the situation under control, official sources said.

Anti-riot personnel on Vajra and Varun vehicles were moving in the town.

Jayakumar said that the AIADMK government under the late J Jayalalithaa had moved the Supreme Court against a green tribunal order allowing the plant to function, and the petition was pending there.

The minister said the government had not given the licence for expansion of the plant.

"There is no support by the AMMA government to any project that is not desired by people," he said.

Pollution board action

During the closure, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board rejected Vedanta's licence to operate the smelter in April, saying the company had not complied with local environmental laws. Sterlite has challenged the step. The appellate authority of the pollution board has adjourned the next hearing to June 6. The board has accused Sterlite of dumping copper slag in a river and not furnishing reports of groundwater analysis of borewells near the plant. This not the first time the plant has shut down. It remained shut for weeks in 2013 due to a case at the National Green Tribunal.

Why are people against the smelter?

Residents have been demanding closure of the smelter for the past 100 days, and had announced they would take out a march to the Tuticorin District Collectorate on Tuesday. The district has been witnessing several protests by locals and others against the plant and its proposed expansion. Protesters have alleged that the smelter was polluting ground water in their area. An activist group has accused pollution board of allowing the company to operate its smelter with shorter chimney stacks than permitted which helped the company reduce costs but harmed the environment.

Hindián Supreme Court refused to shut the plant to stop the expansion

Meanwhile, on April 2, 2013, the Supreme Court delivered a severe indictment that was illogically followed by a sentencing that appeared to reward Sterlite. The apex court agreed with all allegations made by petitioners and the people of Thoothukudi, but refused to shut down the company. The Supreme Court argued that: “The plant of the appellants contributes substantially to the copper production in India and copper is used in defence, electricity, automobile, construction and infrastructure etc. The plant of the appellants has about 1,300 employees and it also provides employment to large number of people through contractors. . .”

Supreme Court fines Sterlite Industries nearly 100 crore rupees for pollution

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday fined British resources giant Vedanta nearly $20 million over pollution from its huge copper smelter, which has just been shut by a new row over a "toxic" gas leak.

The court told Sterlite Industries, a unit of London-listed Vedanta Resources, to pay Rs. 100 crore over five years for air pollution from its copper plant - India's biggest - in Tamil Nadu state's port city of Tuticorin.

dumb sanghi, without Tamilnadu, Hindiáns will be beggars and Hindi defence industries will be crippled and China and Pakistan will be knocking your doors. Btw, keep to topic, i.e sterlite, which is a environmental and health hazard.

If Tamilnadu remains with India, Tamils will be beggars. India's coastal projects - nuclear , sterlite etc have turned Tamil fishermen into beggars
