ISLAMABAD: After a twenty-minute grueling hike from Sharda Village, hopping over streams of ice-cold water and climbing up the massive stone blocks forming the stairs that lead to Sharda Peeth, one gets a breathtaking bird’s eye view of the lush green, picturesque Neelum Valley in the backdrop of this ancient hidden gem.

Located on the banks of Neelum River, Sharda Peeth, commonly known as the University of Sharda, is approximately 50 miles from Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir. This lost treasure is often overshadowed by the awe-inspiring beauty of Neelum Valley and therefore often overlooked by tourists.

After arriving in the temple’s courtyard, imagination immediately takes a flight back by two millennia. Once can visualise groups of monks draped in saffron robes; some meditating while others deeply engrossed in ancient scrolls, and engaged in animated debate about the purpose of life.

Sharda Peeth was one of the most important seats of learning and mysticism in South Asia during its heyday, where besides religion, philosophy, contemporary literature, along with astronomy and logic were taught by monks who had spent their lives in scholastic pursuits.

The empty arches in all four corners of the courtyard must have housed beautiful statues of Buddha and other deities. In the centre lies the main structure which once sheltered Sarasvati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, arts, wisdom and learning, and is carved out of a rare wood found deep in the dense pine forests of Kashmir. Sharda Peeth’s marvelously unique architecture, despite being in a dilapidated condition, baffles even modern engineers.

A much frequented centre of Hinduism and Buddhism back in the day, the temple had its own script which was used as the medium of instruction. Kashmiri Hindus, especially pundits, remain highly devoted to this temple to-date and pray to it for the charity of knowledge.

Some renowned historians and philosophers from the past have traveled great distances to pay pilgrimage and access Sharda library’s manuscripts. Locals from the area often share stories of a young Hindu knowledge-seeker from Indian Gujrat, Hema Chandra, who spent time at the library in order to compile an encyclopedia of ancient languages, religions and literature.

Another Muslim historian, Al Biruni, visited India in 1030 and has mentioned Sharda Peeth in his book titled “Kitabul Hind.” He was, however, unable to reach the temple since the roads were snowbound during his visit.

Maybe Sharda Peeth’s proximity to the Line of Control is what has caused it to be overlooked in terms of tourism. This important landmark is in ruins today due to lack of maintenance and is in urgent need of restoration after being severely damaged by the 2005 earthquake. Once renovated, this temple bears great potential for cultural and faith-based local as well as international tourists to come and visit.

Sharada Peeth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sharada Devi is goddess of studies. Sharada Peeth is the citadel of Knowledge for all Hindus not just Kashmiris.

Every Hindu / vedic student chants the below Sharada Stotram (verses) before commencing their studies everyday.

Both Kashmir and Kailash Mansarovar have great significance to Hindus. Unfortunately both of them are no longer under their control.

Namasthe Sharade devi, Kashmeera pura Vasini,
Thwam aham prathaye nithyam , vidhya dhanam cha dehi may. 1

Salutations to Goddess Sharada who lives in Kashmir,
I pray you daily and so give me knowledge as gift.

Ya Shradha , dharana medha , vagh devi vidhi vallabha,
Bhaktha jihwagra sadhana shamadhi guna dhayini. 2

You are attention, understanding , wisdom, goddess of speech and consort of Brahma,
Sitting at the tip of the toungue of your devotees , you grant peace and all that is good.

Namami Yaminim nadha lekha alankrutha kunthalam,
Bhavaneem bhava santhapa nirvapana sudha nadheem. 3

Salutations to her who decorates her tresses with the darkness of night and sound of writing,
And to Goddess Bhavani who cures sorrow due to life like a river of nectar.

Bhadra kalyai namo nithyam sarasvathyai namo nama,
Veda vedanga vedantha vidhya sthanebhya eva cha. 4

I salute daily you as Bhadra kali as well as salute her as Saraswathi,
As you are the home of Vedas, branches of Vedas , philosophy and knowledge.

Brahma swaroopa paramaa jyothi roopa sanathani,
Sarva vidhyadhi devi ya thasyai vanyai namo nama. 5

Salutation to Vani who is the goddess of all types of learning,
Who has the form of Brahma , the ultimate light and is for ever.

Yaya vinaa jagat sarva sasva jeevan mrutham bhaveth,
Jnanadhi devi ya thasyai saraswathyai namo nama. 6

Salutations to Goddess Saraswathi , who is the supreme goddess of wisdom,
Without whom the entire universe would appear dead even though it is alive.

Yaya vinaa jagat sarvam mooka munmathavad sadaa,
Ya devi vaghadhishtathri thasyai vanyai namo nama, 7

Salutations to goddess Vani , who presides over the act of speaking ,
Without whom this world would be dumb, confused and mad

Hindus are burning everyday seeing new new structures which lies in Pakistan's possession now.
I thank the bigots who have thanked your posts.

As a matter of fact, we know that it lies in Pakistani control now.

It was a symbol of educational excellence. We still pray to it - "Namastey Sharada devi Kashmir Purvasini Tam Ham Prartheye Nityam Vidya dyanam dhe de hi mey".

thank you sir, very kind of you.... are indians allowed to visit these places???
Nope you need ministral level permission to enter Azad Kashmir if you are an Indian and this place is super close to L.O.C where on numerous occasions clashes do occur so i your chances are really slim though under the intra kashmir treaty(dont remember its exact name) i think @SarthakGanguly you might be given permission to visit

Bangladesh has no structures: Hindu , Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh. No one cares about your swamp filled with lungi clad pole vaulters.

This thread is about Pakistan so dont steal it onto irrelevant talks.

Though you asked about Bangladesh. This is true we dont have much Hindu structures. But rich ancient Budhist structures. Go educate yourself by googling "Bangladesh Buddhist structures". A quick look in the image result will be fine. UNESCO world heritage Sompur Mahabihara and 60 dome mosque will be nice find. Apart from Mahastangarh, Moynamoti etc some other Buddhist structures.
