Materials scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee (IIT-R) have developed microwave absorbing nanocomposite coatings that could make aircraft almost invisible to radar.

The technology for building invisible, or stealth aircraft, is a closely guarded secret of developed countries and a handful of laboratories in India are doing research in this area.

Radars that emit pulses of microwave radiation identify flying aircraft by detecting the radiation reflected by the aircraft's metallic body.

The nanocomposite coatings developed by Rahul Sharma, RC Agarwala and Vijaya Agarwala at IIT-R absorb most of the incident radiation and reflect very little.

Sharma, who revealed his team's work at an international nanomaterials conference held recently at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, believes their nano-product is a significant step in developing a technology to enable aircraft escape radar surveillance and protect its equipment from electronic "jamming".

Nanoparticles - so called because of their very small size - are known to exhibit unique physical and chemical properties. The IIT team found that crystals of "barium hexaferrite" with particle size of 10-15 nanometres have the ability to absorb microwaves. (Human hair, for comparison, is 100,000 nanometres thick).

They developed special processes for synthesising the nanopowder and formulating it as a coating.

Sharma said that the nanocomposite coating on the aluminium sheet absorbed 89 per cent of incident microwaves at 15 giga hertz - the frequency normally used by radars - reflecting only 11 per cent. A stealth aircraft should ideally absorb all the incident radiation and reflect nothing.

Basically a RAM coating that can be applied to aircraft to lower the radar signature? If it is then it is nothing new.

i don't know how they are gonna implement that finding on plane but can you put some light on technology of F-22 reptor and B2's[apart from their design which helps to divert the Waves].

That stuff is almost certainly very secret, but I would imagine it would involve anti radar coatings, extremely advanced EW suites and all kinds of things I wouldn't have the faintest idea about if someone told me about them. Basically all kinds of stuff you wont find on any other plane as well as the very best of the stuff that is already present, putting it ahead of everything current and I would put money on it being ahead of anything else for at least the next 20 years, what with upgrades and all. The cash strapped Russians wont be able to come up with anything as good unless their technology skips a few generations and the emerging powers India and China are just learning the art (China seems to have a lead in this area) so I highly doubt they will come up with anything as good.
 
Indians will gain great amount of knowledge working with Russians in PAK-FA project. Next ten year are extremely crucial for R&D and stealth technology in aviation. :agree:

I believe Indian defense R&D will take great leap forward from this year.DRDO and IAF is directly recruiting people from IIT's and NIT's this year and this has never happened before,which means DRDO is increasing it's sphere in terms of variety and numbers.

Indians should be thankful to J L Nehru it was his mooted idea which moved Parliament and India came with one of the best technology and management institutes, NASA also has lots of IITians. DRDO is doing great research projects, two years back I read one article on DRDO in Telegraph UK, and they thought of it highly.

Are they going to use the same "Stealth" technology they currently use to portray their country to everyone as "The World's largest democracy"?!?! If they are, i bet the stealth fighter comes with Air-to-air "Separatists" and Laser guided "Genocide".

Anyway, best of luck! ;)

DRDO is doing great research projects, two years back I read one article on DRDO in Telegraph UK, and they thought of it highly.

yah, you are right it was nehru's vision.many of European nation helped in building these institutes in India. now we are able to enjoy the fruit of the tree which was sown 50 years back.

The parachute will help the troopers to jump from a height of 30,000 feet as compared to the current jump height of 10,000 feet and will avoid detection from the enemy as the sound of aircraft, at this height would be inaudible.

The DRDO has developed a new "stealth-parachute" :rofl:, capable of para-dropping soldiers at three times the normal height at which they are presently dropped, to be used by defence forces in the operational situations.

The parachute will help the troopers to jump from a height of 30,000 feet as compared to the current jump height of 10,000 feet and will avoid detection from the enemy as the sound of aircraft, at this height would be inaudible, say experts.

"The benefit of such a capability will mean that we can start dropping our soldiers at a long distance (say up to 30 kilometres) from the objective, in a safer airspace. Besides, at this height the sound of the plane would go unnoticed by enemy forces on the ground," Chief Controller of Defence Research and Development Organisation W Selvamurty said.

The new system comes equipped with lightweight oxygen cylinders to avoid suffocation, as at these heights, oxygen becomes scarce. The system provides oxygen on demand during breathing for nearly 45 minutes after bailout, Selvamurty said.

"A paratrooper till now could only be dropped from a maximum height of 10,000 feet and one of the risks involved here is that while being airdropped from such lower heights, the para-jumper can get exposed to enemy," he said.

The new parachutes also sport directional gadgets which will keep the para-jumper abreast of his landing directions.

"The para-jumpers will be airborne for nearly 45 minutes. With the help of directional gadgets, he can manoeuvre the parachute to reach the target," Selvamurty added.

"These new parachutes would come handy for operations close to the border and for cipher activities. We had some parachutes from abroad similar to this but they were not suitable for our requirements. We developed these parachutes keeping in mind our specific needs," he said.

Orders for nearly 700 units of these parachutes have already been placed by defence forces, he said.

Surely dropping at 30,000ft is going to affect the accuracy of the drop, although it is nice to have the option to surely it is not worth the extra cost.

Ram Coating which produces 98% RCS reduction is very significant. plus if it can stand the temperatures at supersonic speed of more than 800 deg C

How about missile systems wit all on the ground and flying stealth. -20Db. i Think that shoud bother both Pakistan and China.
