The US State Department wants Bangladesh to buy defence products from Washington.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said the State Department officials made the request when he recently visited Washington.

He had a meeting with his counterpart Mike Pompeo and also met other officials.

“At the assistant secretary level they asked 'why don’t’ you buy defence products from us? You buy them from other countries',” he said on being asked about his visit after his meeting with Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering.

Momen replied: “Of course we’ll buy if you are affordable."

He said particularly in spare parts the American defence contractors jack up the price. “If you don’t do that and offer a special price then definitely we will buy them,” he told the State Department official.

“We don’t have any problem (buying from the US). Their price is just too high,” he said. Bangladesh traditionally buys defence products from China and Russia, the rivals of the Americans.

During his visit, Momen said he discussed almost all the issues including trade and investment.

He said US entrepreneurs informed him that they were keen to invest in Bangladesh’s energy sector which has huge potential.

“Americans are very keen to invest in the energy (sector) and they told me that General Electric was coming here with a huge investment offer,” he said.

The minister said he told the US officials that Bangladesh always encourages the diversity of investment and trade.

When asked, he said the US is apprehensive of the Chinese one-belt, one-road initiative.

“I told them you (US) can come and develop infrastructure through your Indo-Pacific strategy. You’ll be winner. We’ll be winner. We maintain balanced relations with all.

He also told his counterpart Pompeo that Bangladesh’s economy was about to take off and "it’s time for you to join us”.

“If you don’t join us now, you’ll lose the market. If your guys want to make money, they should come to Bangladesh right now. Or else, they’ll miss the bus,” he said, on his maiden US visit after taking office as foreign minister.

Bingo!

I had posted about something along those lines awhile ago when I met with a family friend who is close with some US lawmakers.

I had suggested to him why doesnt BD approach the US for arms.

He had told me that it was already being discussed.

The man speaketh the truth!

I don't think so.

But what is interesting is that something has changed.

The US seems to see BD a little bit differently from years past.

And BD seems to see China a bit differently as well.

I think for whatever reason BD is very reluctant to buy from the US, I guess for pricing reasons mainly.

However, its good to see word of the possibility from official sources.

within BD forces there is a very big dissatisfaction with Chinese arms specially with after sales service.

Dealing with the US means playing ball by their rules.

And being subject to their whims.

But going forward, I see Myanmar as the main antagonist to BD.

Prospect for conflict with India is nearly nil.

I think defence acquisitons have to be seen and done in a macro political light.

Of course friendship to all and malice to none.

But I want BD to gain the ability to defend itself and give another a punch in the face if need be.

The most effective weapons in the world are from the US and Europe.

I'm glad the US is open to selling BD weapons.

I hope BD has the foresight to take them up on their offer.

. . . .
Give us 3 squadrons of F-16 for 1/3rd the price. We happy, you happy, win win. Don't forget to add some AMRAAM and Harpoons. :D

it is more like blackmailing. we had issue with frigate program in CDDL. that is why it delayed but good news is from next year we are going to start our frigate construction.

Last year I heard we are starting this year. Are we ever going to start?

I think we should use it more like leverage, you know ;)

I'd be all for F-16s to be honest.

Its an old platform but still highly effective.

The question is, are they available?

Although, interestingly BD tried to acquire F-16s in the late 90's only to be laughed at by the US.
