Which Cruise Lines Have Starlink Internet Service?

Almost all of the major cruise lines and some niche brands have already announced their partnership with Starlink to provide internet services onboard their ships.

These include:
American Queen Voyages

Of course, internet services onboard ships come at a cost, unless it is included in a promotional fare or if it is part of a cruise line’s loyalty club perk.

There is usually a choice of a basic package for emails and web surfing and a premium package that allows for social media, streaming, and gaming capabilities. Check with your cruise line for their package pricing.

While pricing may not be coming down, expect connectivity to go up, making staying plugged in at sea a true reality in the not-so-distant future.

Scenic Group has unveiled plans to add SpaceX’s Starlink high-speed internet service to their oceangoing fleet, beginning with Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours’ Scenic Eclipse II.

Starlink will then be added to Emerald Cruises’ Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Sakara, the latter of which is scheduled to launch in August. Finally, Scenic Eclipse will receive the service by the end of 2023.

SpaceX’s Starlink provides cruise ships with internet speeds of up to 70 times faster than standard using a network of 3,500 satellites, which it plans to eventually expand to more than 42,000 satellites. The service is available in many of Scenic’s destinations and cruising routes, which range from Europe to Antarctica.

Lindblad Expeditions Installs SpaceX’s Starlink

Lindblad Islander II

Lindblad Expeditions announced the roll-out of SpaceX’s high-speed broadband internet, Starlink, bringing reliable connectivity to the most remote areas like Antarctica, Svalbard and Alaska.
With the implementation of Starlink, Lindblad Expeditions also announced three new tiered internet packages to be available by the end of the 2023.

These include the Basic plan which enables free messaging via apps like iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook and social media; Enhanced plan that supports web browsing and social media; and a Premium plan allowing unlimited web, social and streaming access.

“Our goal has always been to help connect our guests with the off-the-beaten-path destinations around the world and now, with Starlink, we can help them stay connected with their family, friends, and colleagues back home,” said Noah Brodsky, chief commercial officer, Lindblad Expeditions.
“Starlink will enable up to 10-times faster download speeds over our existing service and enhanced streaming capabilities with full coverage throughout some of our most remote itineraries, like Antarctica, the Canadian Arctic, Svalbard, and Alaska. This enhanced connectivity will also enable even more meaningful research and conservation work for our naturalists, expedition leaders, and the researchers in our Visiting Scientist Program.”

Starlink internet is currently available on the National Geographic Venture, National Geographic Quest, National Geographic Sea Bird, National Geographic Sea Lion, National Geographic Explorer, National Geographic Endurance, and the National Geographic Resolution.

Aqua Expeditions adds Starlink cruise ship Wi-Fi

aqua-1-1.png

Small ship expedition operator Aqua Expeditions has introduced Starlink cruise ship Wi-Fi.
It is live on Aqua Mare, Aqua Nera, and Aqua Blu.

Aria Amazon and Aqua Mekong will follow by September 2023.

Aqua says it is the only small ship expedition line to offer the low-Earth orbit satellite technology on its voyages.

SpaceX Starlink currently has a network of more than 2,500 satellites, providing a wide net of coverage.

“Our goal is to provide the best possible cruise ship Wi-Fi connection particularly during our longer voyages,” said Francesco Galli Zugaro, CEO.

SpaceX’s Starlink partners with European satellite giant SES for combined cruise market service

  • European satellite operator SES is teaming up with SpaceX’s Starlink to offer a combined service to cruise operators.
  • SES will manage the joint offering, called “SES Cruise mPOWERED + Starlink,” as a service that it says will provide high-speed, reliable internet service to cruise ships.
  • “There is unmet demand that neither of us by ourselves can provide to certain cruise customers,” SES CEO Ruy Pinto told CNBC.
PARIS – European satellite operator SES is teaming up with SpaceX’s Starlink to offer a combined service to cruise operators, the companies announced on Wednesday.

SES will manage the joint offering, called “SES Cruise mPOWERED + Starlink,” as a service that it says will provide high-speed, reliable internet service to cruise ships, regardless of whether they’re clustered in port or far out at sea.

“There is unmet demand that neither of us by ourselves can provide to certain cruise customers,” SES CEO Ruy Pinto told CNBC at the World Satellite Business Week conference.

Pinto touted the partnership as providing “a win-win solution” that gives access to complementary capabilities that each of their satellite networks don’t provide. There are three types of orbits around the Earth where satellite communications companies generally operate: GEO (geosynchronous equatorial orbit), MEO (medium Earth orbit), and LEO (low Earth orbit).

Luxembourg-based SES has over 70 satellites in orbit, split between GEO and MEO, while Starlink flies all its satellites in LEO. Currently SES is upgrading its MEO network with satellites known as mPOWER, with four of the new satellites in operation so far and plans to launch seven more in the coming months.

SpaceX has launched over 5,000 Starlink satellites to date and had over 1.5 million customers as of May.

“We are excited to collaborate with SES on a joint solution that combines the reach and capacity of both satellite constellations to offer a solution unlike any other in the market,” SpaceX Vice President of Starlink Business Operations Chad Gibbs said in a statement in SES’ press release.

As SES’ traditionally core satellite video business declines steadily, the company is turning to other markets to find growth. Cruises are within its fastest growing “mobility” business, a unit which brought in 139 million euros ($149 million) in first-half 2023 revenue, up 14% year-over-year.

The European company also heavily emphasized its multi-orbit approach of satellites as a competitive advantage over other traditional operators, and partnering with Starlink further broadens that effort.

SpaceX disrupted the satellite communications market with Starlink, leading to a flurry of consolidation among global players — including a failed attempt for SES to merge with competitor Intelsat. While Starlink originally focused on the consumer market, it’s quickly into other verticals including enterprise, mobility, aviation, and more – with a foray into the cruise market beginning last year through a deal with Royal Caribbean Cruises.

“Let’s not be shy that Starlink has evolved,” Pinto said, adding that SpaceX “surprised most of the industry by their speed” of development and growth.

“There is trust between the two companies, and there is a common desire to benefit the customer and, quite frankly, make sure that both technologies are available and not, quite frankly, killing each other needlessly,” Pinto added.

SES said it’s in discussions with multiple initial cruise customers for the combined service, but declined to specify further. Revenue will be split between the companies on the basis of whichever service is being used.

And the companies are also talking about other potential markets that would be a fit for the combined SES and Starlink service.

“Where can we go together? There is a specific one that I can’t disclose yet, where we have a very similar template, but it’s not going to happen on every market segment,” Pinto said.
