A California jury granted $50 million in damages to Michael Garcia, a delivery worker who was severely burned at a Starbucks drive through in Los Angeles after a hot cup spilled down his lap. When Garcia, who was employed by Postmates picked up an order of three venti sized "medicine ball" teas on February 8, 2020, the incident took place, hot tea spilled onto his lap as he accepted the order because one of the beverages was not properly contained in the container.

Incident and Lawsuit
According to Garcia's claim, Starbucks handled the hot drinks carelessly by neglecting to make sure the top was fastened. Severe injuries, including third degree burns to his genital area, deformity and crippling nerve damage were caused by the spill, in order to treat his injuries, Garcia had skin grafts and other treatments that have been called "life-altering."

Jury Decision
Starbucks was ordered to pay $50 million in damages after the jury judged the firm responsible for Garcia's injuries. This sum includes both past and future damages, such as emotional suffering, humiliation, loss of life enjoyment, mental anguish and physical discomfort, jury's conclusion that Starbucks did not fulfill its duty of care to handle hot beverages safely is reflected in the verdict.

Starbucks' Reaction

Comparing This Case to Others Like It
The situation is reminiscent to the famous lawsuit against McDonald's in 1994, in which Stella Liebeck was burned in the third degree after spilling hot coffee on herself. Although the punitive penalties were ultimately lowered, Liebeck was initially awarded about $3 million. This historical background emphasizes the continued difficulties food and beverage firms confront in guaranteeing the safety of their customers when handling hot objects.

Starbucks's role
Despite not agreeing with the jury conclusions, Starbucks' response to the verdict demonstrates its dedication to upholding high safety standards, company choice to file an appeal demonstrates its attempts to strike a balance in a cutthroat market between operational effectiveness and consumer safety.

Challenges for International Trade
