‘Stable democracy helps Bangladesh pull ahead of India, Pakistan’

It's not about democracy. Singapore (highest GDP per capita in Asia) is a soft authoritarian meritocracy with democracy only in name and China (highest GDP in Asia and soon the largest economy in the world) is a proper political meritocracy with no political equality.

It's all about policies and good leaders.

Also, BD's exports have been at the back of Least Developed Nation and other statuses that Pakistan doesn't enjoy. If you take some key things away, the 'democracy' would start looking pretty bad there too.
US is by and large our biggest client. Pakistan enjoys GSP privilege, we don't.

As @Black_cats mentioned, India and Pakistan chose to opt out of LDC status. Your active choice.

I hate these comparisions with India and Pakistan but things need to be put into perspective.

Thank you for the correction. I believe there is still a huge difference in subsidies available to exporters (especially textile) in both countries. I will dig deeper and revert.

what is democracy ?
According to Hanif Sonket's joke , "Democracy is the government buy the people, off the people, and far the people" !

your so called GDP will go negative if you have border with afghanistan for 1 month
you have no relations with India, bad with Afghanistan and non cordial with iran.
Only neighbor you get along with is China and we know why .
Stop projecting your issues on others

Taiwan was the first Asian tiger, run by a general. South Korea had a fake 'democracy' where the US would make sure it's party won every time. Ditto for Japan.

And of course the powerhouse of today is China, a shining example of multiparty democracy!

Yes guys, no progress without democracy. :dance3:
not Japan, others as you say.

Lolllz half of the afghanistan sitting here
Iran is under sanctions even supa pawa india run away from iran trade .

It is a good thing we do not have a rogue military and intelligence agency which would start problems in the first place.
Yeah we see who killed mujib the rouge military even killed small childs

The we see how rouge military killed zia ur rehman with cold blood .

Last we see few years ago how rouge military killed 60 of thier officers and dump them in sewage .we dont have such mutiny like pirates here .

I don't like it when Bangladeshis and indians keep comparing themselves to Pakistan to make us supposedly feel bad that they are ahead. I will give a few example of why Pakistan has been cursed ever since its inception. Bangladesh is not surrounded by outright hostile or semi-hostile neighbors on all sides, they do not need to significantly spend money on defense and military, they are not a multi-ethnic nation with ethnic tensions, they are not neighbours of afghanistan, they are not in a region which has witnessed constant war ever since the soviets invaded, etc. Quite frankly, bangladesh is a geopolitically irrelevant one-party semi-dictatorship which is a subservient state to india. They focused on their economy because of a lack of internal and external security threats and fixed it, congratulations. Pakistan on the other hand is in and near the epicenter of the war on terror. Pakistan has been bombed by enemies and allies for 20 years and has multiple groups aiming for its downfall internally and externally. Since the war on terror is mainly over we should finally focus on our economy and rightfully so. It's hard to attract investment, jobs, FDI, have a good HDI, etc. when theres bomb blasts going off in every city every other day. Thankfully our military was competent enough to curb terrorism and we will rise inshallah.

Stop blaming geography, Afghanistan etc for economic mismanagement. Till 2008 we had higher per capita then both India and BD. Then came PPP/N era who decided to follow import based model which shut down industries. FDI is overrated, BD hardly receive any.

Sri Lanka economic collapse is good lesson for Pakistan.

All these factors you listed played small part. It will be ideal that Pakistan didn't had to worry about smuggling and terrorism from Afghanistan/Iran.

@bluesky Would appreciate your thoughts on the above.
Let's forget about BAL. They will disintegrate after Hasina retires.

Beggars fighting mine is bigger than yours..

A comfort post when Pakistan's GDP per capita is now 75% that of BD and will drop down to 65% in just 5 years time according to all economic forecasts.

Pakistan used to be 70-80% ahead of BD in per capita 15 years ago.

This year is significant as BD has surpassed India also in GDP per capita.

10% of Afghan population died in that conflict- USSR plan was to end the rural pop if you don't believe it search up car , Ukraine Muslims and Thier sovietization
Only power to turn Muslims into nothing

Your own tribal populace going insane, not to mention USSR and Indian alliance, intercepted wires of Soviet plans for the country

Bhutto was smart enough to know what's up- you don't act like cowards when time comes
You fight
yeah there was no option at that time but to fight otherwise half of Pakistan would have been gone for good too!!! people forget long before we had a well trained army or an intelligence agency for that matter...the afghans have been trying to disrupt us..... history shows who is the true aggressor here....late 40s,50s will tell you afghans never wanted good relations with Pakistan at any given time even though the military capacity of Pakistan at the time was negligible!

Too ignorant and too proud to understand the reality of the situation.

BD only looks a bit bad due to lack of time to accumulate wealth so far due to being behind for 7 decades.

In the 2030s the disparity between BD and Pakistan will be there for all to see.

You are totally out of your depth to engage in this convo.

This will highly hit like a ton of bricks and what you thought you understood will be shattered and your world view turned upside down.

BD is nothing like the rest of South Asia anymore in terms of economy. It behaves more like an East Asian one.
