Srinagar-Leh all weather link tunnel work to start in Aug

NEW DELHI: The work on two strategic all-weather tunnels on Srinagar-Leh highway - Zojila and Z Morh - will begin in August.

Sources in the highways ministry said that the Border Road Organization (BRO) has estimated the cost to be 5,000 crore. Once built in four years, the tunnels will provide round-the-year connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh region, and will give a boost to tourism and help improvement movement of goods to Leh that remains cut off from the rest of the country for at least six months a year due to heavy snowfall.

Highway ministry officials said though originally the tunnel at Z Morh pass was conceived for 3.1 km, the BRO had proposed to extend it to 6.5 km. The ministry has approved the extension. Similarly, the Zojila tunnel would be 12 km.
