“A police curfew has been imposed in Chilaw Police area with immediate effect until 6 am tomorrow to control the tense situation,” police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera told Reuters. The police later said the curfew would be lifted at 4 am.

A screenshot of the alleged Facebook exchange seen by Reuters showed a user had written in Sinhalese “It is difficult to make us cry” and added a local slur against Muslim men.

A Facebook user identified as Hasmar Hameed, whom two locals said was the man later arrested, replied in English: “Dont laugh more 1 day u will cry.”

Sri Lanka blocks social media after worst anti-Muslim unrest since Easter bombings

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka on Monday temporarily blocked some social media networks and messaging apps, including Facebook and WhatsApp, after attacks on mosques and Muslim-owned businesses in the worst unrest since Easter bombings by Islamist militants.

The island nation has ramped up security as fears grow that minority Muslims among its population of 22 million could face sectarian violence after Islamist bombers blew themselves up in four hotels and three churches, killing more than 250 people.

“Social media blocked again as a temporary measure to maintain peace in the country,” Nalaka Kaluwewa, director general of the government information department, told Reuters on Monday.

On Twitter, Sri Lanka’s leading mobile phone operator Dialog Axiata Plc said it had also received instructions to block the apps Viber, IMO, Snapchat, Instagram and Youtube until further notice.

Several dozen people threw stones at mosques and Muslim-owned stores and a man was beaten in the Christian-majority town of Chilaw on the west coast on Sunday in a dispute that started on Facebook, police sources and residents told Reuters.

Authorities said they arrested the author of a Facebook post, identified as 38-year-old Abdul Hameed Mohamed Hasmar, whose online comment “1 day u will cry” people said was interpreted as threatening violence.

Later on Sunday and early on Monday authorities arrested a group of men in the nearby district of Kurunegala for allegedly attacking Muslim-owned businesses, a police source told Reuters.

Military spokesman Sumith Atapattu said people in the mostly Buddhist district then demanded the men’s release.

“To control the situation, a police curfew was imposed during the night,” Atapattu added.

Several mosques and Muslim homes were damaged in the attack in the district, the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka said, but the precise extent of damage and the number of arrests was not immediately clear.

The attacks escalated in the absence of immediate police action, said one resident of the area and a mosque official, who both spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

“The attack continued for nearly two hours and they attacked one house also in the village. There were hundreds of attackers,” said a resident of the region’s Muslim-majority town of Kiniyama, which is surrounded by Buddhist villages.

The main mosque was attacked, a copy of the Koran, the Muslim holy book dragged along the ground and two motorcycles parked nearby were burned, he added.

A mosque official in Kiniyama said the attacks were triggered when several people, including some Buddhist monks, demanded a search of a 105-acre (43-hectare) pond near the main mosque.

“When Muslims tried to prevent the attack, we were asked by police to go inside,” the official said.

Police in the area were not immediately available to comment.

Since the bombings, Muslim groups say they have received dozens of complaints about people being harassed.

Other communities in the multi-ethnic nation say they fear the government, which failed to act on successive warnings about looming Islamist attacks, has not caught all potential militants.

A violent clash between Muslims and Christians erupted a week ago in the west coast city of Negombo, the site of one of the suicide attacks that killed more than 100 people during Easter prayers.

The government also imposed a ban on social media after that clash.

I foresaw this since the Hijab ban. SL's are just little Indians. It's in their blood to hate Muslims & Islam. All it took was one bombing from Indian trained terrorists and boom, we now see the true reality of Sri Lankans.

Absolutely disgusting....this is how they repay us when we helped them defeat Tamil Tigers??

Where are those SL's of PDF that were jumping up & down when the hijab ban was announced? Where are those PDF Pakistanis where also celebrated the hijab ban!?

You all think it was just gonna end at the hijab ban? LOL....now we'll see the true nature of these disgusting tiny island dwellers. :disagree:

This is their internal matter. We will continue to support sri-lanka . Srilanka even didn't raise question against Pakistan when armed militant attacked srilanka cricket team bus in Lahore. Their behavior is always good towards Pakistan.

Ridiculous overgeneralisation, tarnishing an entire nation with sweeping statements. It is such sentiment that terror organisations exploit to their advantage. Pakistani people stand with Sri Lankans, regardless of their religion. All agitators on all sides should be snuffed out - and I think SL security forces are more than capable of doing so.

The Provincial Council elections were supposed to be held this month and with the fake riots the government is delaying it indefinitely

They are also launching a mud slinging campaign at Gotabaya with conspiracy theories saying he was the one behind the NTJ and are now trying to get his name involved the so-called anti-Muslim violence.
This also allows the government to avoid removing or arresting Muslim politicians with links to extremists.

Sri Lankans are buddhists...both hindus and buddhists preach brotherhood of mankind..in fact for us all the living beings hold same value...The principles of Christianity and Islam go against our philosophy...it wont be long before buddhists in SL take a big campaign to convert the christians back to budfhism
...there is this Friction developing between Buddhists and Abrahamic religions in SL just like in India.

Sinhala violence against minorities is linked to how Sinhala Buddhists view themselves and others.

As per the Mahavamsa, a 6th AD Buddhist chronicle text, Prince Vijaya and his 700 followers landed on the island 3000 yrs ago. An island (Sinhadipa) sanctified by Buddha and its people the Sinhalas - chosen to protect Buddhism (Dammadipa). This Sinhadipa = Dammadipa perception, had an enormous impact in shaping Sinhala Buddhists attitude towards non Sinhala /Buddhist minorities.

Though they exceed the Tamil / Muslim population, their majority with a minority complex makes them feel out numbered and threaten. They see the island’s Tamils, as part of the larger Tamils in neighbouring Tamil Nadu and the Muslims as part of the larger Muslim ummah.

This “minority complex” resulted in the Sinhalas viewing themselves as victims, who have to act, even violently, to protect the island's Sinhala Buddhist heritage/culture from being taken over by non Buddhist Sinhala, who are “foreigners,” living in the island due to Sinhala Buddhist sufferance.

After independence, Sinhalas project themselves as the guardians of the Sinhala Buddhism, this led to the Sinhalisation of the state and its institutions, marginalising Tamils. Backed by the state, Tamils (and their properties) were targeted by Sinhala mobs in the 1970s/1980s, which led to the emergence of Tamil Tigers.

Sinhala Buddhist supremacist depicted Tamils as “the enemy.” With the LTTE decimated in 2009, Sinhalas extremists needed a new enemy, thus Muslims emerged as their new enemy. Orchestrated/organised by radical Sinhala Buddhist clergy and patrons in political parties, mobilised Sinhala thugs vandalise Muslim homes, mosques, and business establishments.

Sri Lanka will not act against Sinhala Buddhist extremism, so as not to lose the Sinhala hardliners votes.

The Easter church bombing legitimises Sinhala Buddhists attacks on Muslims.
