Sri Lankan prime minister hails cooperation with China


Prime Minister of Sri Lanka D. M. Jayaratne said Thursday that Sri Lanka sees China as a close friend and hails China's positive attitude in supporting the country's development.

During the past five years, Sri Lanka has developed unprecedented strong relations with not only China's central government, but also with provincial governments on the basis of regular high-level exchanges, Jayaratne said at a forum at the ongoing 15th China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT), which is currently being held in China's southeastern coastal city of Xiamen.

"China has become our largest development partner and an important investor in Sri Lanka, especially in infrastructure projects. There are plenty of opportunities and areas that we can exploit for mutual benefit," Jayaratne said.

Sri Lanka offers a wide variety of investment opportunities and incentives for foreign investors, Jayaratne said. China is currently investing in a number of projects in the country, including motorcycle manufacturing, hydroelectricity and apparel manufacturing, he added.

Sri Lanka is currently courting investors for its infrastructure, textiles, computer software and tourism sectors, the prime minister said.

I dont understand why China is doing more infrastructure and economical help with Sri Lanka rather then Pakistan.

Pakistan is 10 times bigger with more potential.

China is the largest supplier of military equipment to Sri Lanka; the two countries also collaborate extensively in the sphere of counter-terrorism and military training.

But how are SL able to get more "Human" help, like more roads, more hotels that help creates jobs and new roads to fund economic growth in your nation and China doesnt do much in greater Pakistan?

If they are intelligent enough, they won't do any such move like fueling Pakistani war ships during Indo-Pak war. They will try to take maximum advantage from India-China strategic rivalry from both India and China.

Defence is not important as SL can't afford to have good defence against India. Even if they buy some 4th Generation 40 Jets + many weapons and defence equipment it would cost some 3-4 Billion $ which will be some 7%-10% of their GDP. Even after that purchase, Our South India defence will be some 5-10 times stronger than SL.

The point is : Will SL afford to go against India which will start of new Era ??

I think because of Shipping hub concept by SL, also China need a good friend when they deal with Indian ocean. So they may be supporting us right now to gain BIGGER advantage in the future. Yep, in the Indian Ocean.

Until and unless, SL maintains equal relation with India and China. It's fine. otherwise SL will create problem for herself.
