Sri Lanka to remove race, religion and marital status of parents from birth certificates

COLOMBO, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan authorities on Wednesday announced that all new birth certificates which will be issued for new born children in the future will not mention any race or religion or the marital status of the parents.

Registrar General of the Registrar General's Department, N. C. Vithanage told local media that all details pertaining to marriage, ethnic group and religion will be removed from the application form for the registration of a birth in Sri Lanka although this was mandatory earlier.

Local media reports said that this decision was taken after many children in the country were reportedly facing issues due to the details of the marriage of parents, especially when enrolling a child in school.

Under the new system, a 12-digit serial number is to be issued for all new birth certificates and this serial number can be used to obtain a national identity card when a child completes 15 years of age, Vithanage said.

The new digital birth certificate will come with a QR code, a bar code and a dedicated watermark to meet international standards to counter forged documents. Enditem

I think the goal is to remove the concept called "minority" and Sinhalese being the dominant language and culture, without any concept of minority will easily absorb Tamils and Moors alike into the general population without the try hard assimilation policies that our clown politicians have done before.

Personally as a Parsi I would love to speak to my countrymen as just Indians.

But surely the name of the child will be a give away.

National identity and the development of it, Is a worthy cause but not to the detriment of ethnic or religious identities, That's where the true intentions of the state come in to question, Having said that the feed back from the public and especially those from minority communities seems positive

I don't get the point of preserving minority identities. Sinhalese themselves are a mix of north Indians, South Indians, some native tribes and southeast Asians. If there was no centralisation in dynastic times then today's Sri Lanka would have 100s of tribes, languages and ethnic groups.

It's obvious there is more to it than meets the eye.

Of course this is aimed at assimilating minorities. It's a no brainer. Sri Lanka is deeply divided. I lived in Sri Lanka until 15 and haven't had a single minority friend growing up. I only knew one Tamil friend of my cousin.

As far as i know, Only the Birth certificate required those details, Other documentations only mentions the nationality

Any Indonesia document also never mention ethnicity, but we still put religion for ID card.

Not disputing that Sri Lankans of all backgrounds are a mixture but given the background of recent ethno nationalist turn especially since the current govt took power on that particular agenda, There's reason to be apprehensive.. Sri Lankan national identity must and need to be encouraged but not at the risk of the minority identities and certainly not to the current narrative of Sri Lankan equates to Sinhala Buddhist identity
