Now that's something excellent done by the government. I hope they can put it into good use rather than using free WIFI for **** and Facebook. :D Sri Lanka has a lot of opportunities in the IT sector since we can interoperate some of the services into making them available through internet.

Misleading title. I thought there would be free WiFi available at any point in the country.

Free Wi-Fi for Regional Towns launch today | Daily News Online : Sri Lanka's National News

Event begins from Polonnaruwa District General Hospital

Rasika Somarathna

President Maithripala Sirisena will launch the 'Free Wi-Fi for Regional Towns programme' today from the Polonnaruwa District General Hospital premises.

The authorities will simultaneously unveil free Wi-Fi zones in 100 major towns and the relevant services will be made available from today.

Under the free Wi-Fi programme, Sri Lankan users will be able to access the internet up to 100 MB free of charge per month at locations where the facility is available.

The programme spearheaded by the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRC SL) is a pledge made by President Sirisena in his election manifesto.

Nearly all towns are expected to be brought under the programme soon thereafter, which will place free internet readily available throughout the country particularly to the rural youth.

Internet service providers, both private and government, have joined hands with the TRC to provide the service, TRCSL Director-General M. M. Zuhair, PC said. According to sources, the service providers will bear the relevant costs.

"Those who exceed 100MB per month limit will have to pay charges for the extra usage. Since the free facility is only for citizens, user registration will precede the free access," Zuhair said.

TRC's 'Free Wi-Fi for Regional Towns' is the brain-child of President Sirisena and will be implemented by the TRC with the cooperation of the internet service providers and the ICTA.

Today's event in Polonnaruwa will be held under the theme '100 Locations in 100 Days - More to Follow'.
