Jan. 19, 2014 (LBT) - A fun island is coming up close to the Hambantota Port but Sri Lankans need permits to enter the man-made isle, said Dr Priyath Bandu Wickrama, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority on Thursday, January 16.

Positioned just 300 meters from the coast, the new island will have 48 acres of land area, which would be used mainly for the hospitality functions for foreigners, especially tourists, said Dr Wickrama.

The SLPA chief made these observations at a forum organized by the Shippers Academy Colombo headed by Rohan Masakorala and the Sri Laka Apparel Exporters’ Association headed by Chairman Yohan Lawrence.

has commenced construction of an exclusive entertainment island only for foreigners, off the southern Hambantota coast in the home town of the President, an official said on Thursday.

“The construction has already begun,” said Dr Wickrama.

Commenting on the new Port City planned adjacent to the new South Port, Dr Wickrama said that an investment of US $ 25 billion would be needed for the new project.

The new Port City, also built on reclaimed land, will comprise shopping malls, leisure and recreation activities, a golf course, race track and a lot of greenery. There would be a yacht marina and high rises too will invariably come up but there would be little obstruction of the view of the sea from the Galle Face Green, it was pointed out.

Roadways too will be constructed to connect the Port City to the main expressways and it would considerably ease the traffic congestion in the city.

Considered to be the single largest investment in Sri Lanka, the extent of reclaimed land would be 560 acres.

“A perch in the new development will be sold at Rs. 8.5 million”, said Dr Wickrama, who pointed out that 30 million cubic metres of sand and 3.5 million cubic metres of rock would be needed to complete the project.

The filling could take 24 months and the project would be completed in around 39 months in 2016, according to Dr Wickrama.

Making his observations on the port sector, Dr Wickrama said that SLPA plans to be the main contributor to the national economy with the implementation of a seven-year action plan. The SLPA, as a modern and innovative port operator, has not only provided all facilities to its users but also introduced restructuring of administrative mothodologies as well as advanced financial management systems to ensure enhanced efficiency and productivity.

He also noted the aspirations for the seven-year-action plan as:

To be the Centre of Maritime Excellence

200 million teus in Cargo Handling

US$ one billion in revenue

US$ 10 billion investment within ports

Leading centre for nation’s economy

Green Port Operator

Among the key issues elaborated on was the Colombo Port City development project, which covers 565 acres of reclaimed land in front of the new south harbour, where investments are expected to be over USD 15 billion in the coming decade. The project is set to transform the landscape of the city of Colombo and is considered to be South Asia’s most modern metropolis and the logistics and commercial hub.

Dr Wickrama’s presentation also included plans where the industry could gather information as well as understand opportunities available to the private sector with the development projects. The Port City will have major real estate opportunities, as well as provide international investors with attractive benefits, to locate in the island nation as it emerges as a mega regional port city hub.

The participants at the forum, that comprised not only maritime professionals but also many from various other sectors including travel and tourism, had the opportunity to get a glimpse into the future port related developments in Colombo as well as other ports in Hambantota, Galle and Trincomalee.

The commercial hub regulations, which have declared free ports in Sri Lanka, will provide new opportunities for logistics, shipping, export/manufacturing industry and other investors to operate in a new environment where they can set up regional distribution centres, headquarter operations under a very friendly investment regime along with a liberal trading environment, it was pointed out.

Dr Wickrama also elaborated on the Sri Lanka Ports Authority’s 2020 vision and gave insights into other developments in port related industry, which would include new infrastructure, dry ports, equipment, railway and trucking plans for the future.

Another objective of the forum was to target investors, real estate companies, banks, shipping & logistics companies, exporters, persons involved in international trade, consultants, lawyers, mercantile establishments and any other interested parties.

The forum was held at the Sri Lanka Foundation in Colombo.

1. For the Chinese port operators and naval staff
2. To discourage an Indian attack on the naval base in case of an India China altercation.

hahaha... maybe I should have said Chinese masters rather than port operators/naval staff.

congrats to sri lanka, merely half a century after the last british masters left, they've volutarily invited the chinese.

@Skyline - Brother, in a worst case situation, if there were a repeat of the Tsunami of years past, do you think the Island is well placed enough to avoid the brunt of it ?

Indian logic.

Chinese Invested in Pakistan/Sri Lanka -----> Your country has become colony of China
Chinese made 10x investment in India ----> LOL @ you, your friend is investing more in India, Hindi-Chini bhai bhai

Chinese trade increase with Pakistan/Sri Lanka ---> They are your master and dumping cheap products in your country.
Chinese trade 10x with India ---> LOL @ you, your friend have more trade with us.

Chinese company develop & operate port in Pakistan/Sri Lanka ---> You have sold your sovereignty.
Foreign company developed & operating port in India ---> That's business, everyone want to invest in incredible India.
India developing port in Iran ---> India is true friend of Iran.

I still don't get they love to act stupid or they are actually manufactured like this.

will Indians be considered as foreigners too?
