Aug 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Transport Kumar Welgama says that discussions are underway with Chinese companies to purchase buses from China for the state-run Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB).

The Minister said that the Chinese company which seeks opportunity to enter into the local market has agreed to supply buses but further discussions are held regarding the prices.

The Minister further said that the Chinese buses have German engines and they are better in quality.

Minister Welgama says that out of the 7,662 SLTB buses 2,916 are not roadworthy. The majority of the buses of the state bus company are over 10 years old and used to the maximum.

Around ninety percent of these buses are Ashok Leyland buses produced in India.
