Sri Lanka in talks with China over highway projects

Everyone in my family voted for MR in the election before the last one before we went to UK. My friends were telling me how we voted for him and escaped consequences and how MR is ruining the country. SL has a serious problem with people who want to represent their political parties more than the country.

SL has led in most indicators in the region, say doubling South Asian counterparts in GDP per capita, and much higher HDI. Naturally there are occasional hiccups in internal politics, that's normal, as long as the country sails the right direction in the long run.

As said in the other thread, as a strategic move let's get back the rightful ASEAN membership, something that SL turned away years ago. With initiative like ACFTA, there are many opportunities for SL.

Well as opposed to apocalyptic predictions from both sides, the country moves on. Under MR there was both good and bad, similar to this government. And I think this governgovernmentwill seriously consider ASEAN membership as opposed to MR whose foreign policy has isolated SL.

Sri Lanka's economy is on a downward spiral thanks to the economic policies of the new government.

The capital city is now dirty with garbage everywhere.

Infrastructure projects are on hold.

Highways have been pruned down.

Politics is dominated by fights and revenge seeking.

USA and UK are happy that Sri Lanka's PM and government at large are spreading hatred towards the Chinese and China.

Sri Lanka is a basket case in the region.

India and Bangladesh are poised to have higher economic growth.

None of the ASEAN countries will want Sri Lanka in ASEAN. The fact that you actually think that ASEAN would even offer Sri Lanka a place at this stage goes to show what a dumbo you are.

The country has been ruined within a space of a few months since the new government came into power.

Previously Sri Lanka had corruption, but a politically stable government, a growing economy and infrastructure development.

Now Sri Lanka has corruption, an unstable government, a sagging economy and no infrastructure development.

Three cheers!

Sri Lanka is well on its way to being a poverty stricken dump in the Indian Ocean.

You should be opening a bottle of arrack and having a party over the outcome, as I recall you were a vociferous supporter of "regime change" in Sri Lanka.

I appreciate your attitude of being critical, even self-bashing, on your government, that's a valuable trait in its citizen to keep the country moving forward. Silence to evil is the biggest evil in itself.

Can't comment domestic politics of SL as an outsider, but the country has achieved so much, the overall trend is positive despite occasional setbacks. Yes, chances are India and Bangladesh may grow faster than SL based on a "common sense" that they have lower base to start with, however for one, nobody knows the future except fortune tellers (and western media if I might add), two, the track records aren't convincing, and three even if that happens SL still lead by far.

Let's continue to build SL!

Domestic politics in Sri Lanka is the absolute pits.

At least previously, despite an "authoritarian" government there was political stability and economic growth. Now there is almost no government; just a bunch jokers screaming and shouting each other and trying to get one-up on the other political party. Internal rivalries abound. Others are desperately trying to get comissions and back hand deals to compensate for not having a proper income over the last 10 years or so. The current PM who is vehemently anti-Chinese and pro-USA is a cunning man who is the PM not through the ballot, but through trickery. He and his hangers on - along with the village idiot president Sri Lanka has - signalizes a pretty poor future for the island.

Sri Lanka is going back to days when nothing was done, where roads were left to rot, where garbage overflowed, where slums were the norm, and where politics was dominated by power struggles. Stagnation is where Sri Lanka is heading. Nothing more.

Well it doesn't matter whether they are pro-US anti-China, or vice versa, the important thing is pro-SL am I right? As I said I can't and won't comment on SL domestic politics, it's useful read though. Good luck all SL people!

Sri Lanka is moving forward because of the momentum it gathered during MR tenure. The momentum is now dying down due to the mismanaged of the MS-RW government.

MR didn't isloate Sri Lanka in the world arena. It was US/EU that isolated us.

Except, these politicians are not "pro-SL". The SL PM is a US puppet.

In MR's last term he was obsessed with power and less about the country. Even the economic models he introduced weren't sustainable. He started many useless projects like building an international airport in a jungle nowhere which was an huge waste of money. As I said, you should talks for the interests of the country not this party or that party. Even as citizens we are not demanding right things from government. Instead of shouting against everything that the government does, we should ask for infrastructure and services. Besides there's an election coming so lets see what will happen after that.

I'm not going argue with you about the merits of the MR projects just yet. We have to wait and see. Anyway do you honestly believe that RW/MS or any other current government members are concerned more about the country than MR?

I don't think any of them are concenred. MR cared for the country in his first term but then he went power hungry. People voted him out because of that. Even if he stayed in power, he wouldn't have changed anyway. If he loved the country he wouldn't have been acting like a shortsighted idiot.

Even if he went power hungry he was much better than the rest. He was still the old Mahinda that wept at Kabithigollawa.

:woot::woot: We cannot expect everything from MR. Besides we have to sacrifice certain things for the greater good of the country. You might pissed off by what I said but we are not US or Europe. We still need a long way to go.
