The proposal will now be sent to the Attorney General’s Department and must be approved by Parliament to become law

Sri Lanka’s Cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposed ban on wearing full-face veils including Muslim burqas in public, citing national security grounds, despite a UN expert’s comment that it would violate international law.
The Cabinet approved the proposal by Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera at its weekly meeting, Weerasekara said on his Facebook page.

The proposal will now be sent to the Attorney General’s Department and must be approved by Parliament to become law. The government holds a majority in Parliament and the proposal could easily be passed.
Weerasekara has called burqas a sign of religious extremism and said a ban would improve national security.
Wearing of burqas was temporarily banned in 2019 after Easter Sunday suicide bomb attacks killed more than 260 people. Two local Muslim groups that had pledged allegiance to the Daesh group were blamed for the attacks at six locations — two Roman Catholic churches, one Protestant church and three top hotels.

Last month, Pakistani Ambassador Saad Khattak tweeted that a ban would hurt the feelings of Muslims. The UN special rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Ahmed Shaheed, tweeted that a ban would be incompatible with international law and the right to free religious expression.

Muslims make up about 9 per cent of Sri Lanka’s 22 million people, with Buddhists accounting for more than 70 per cent. Ethnic minority Tamils, who are mainly Hindus, comprise about 15 per cent.

Makes complete sense to ban them, face covering burqas have no place in society.

specially which is under constant threat of terrorism.

what if this doesn't stop Sri Lanka descending into chaos?

what other measures is the government contemplating?

Sri Lanka is a country where Muslim radical groups bombed a church in 2019. Banning Burqa is a security measure.

Oh dear....it seems Muslim women are the target yet again. Sri Lanka you are so pathetic.

Yet it was Muslims of Pakistan who made your victory over the Hindu tamils. I remember being in Sri Lanka after the war Gualle Fort to be exact in the south at an exhibition and at the airforce stand when the realised I was Pakistani they were so delighted and thankful to Pakistan (a Muslim country).

I asked if bombings still would happen, would this false analogy be taken back?
Listen Burqa is a clothing which makes no sense in a non muslim nation.

In Muslim countries there are systems by which you can check and identify women user the Burqa which is not possible in a non muslim country.

In Saudi Arabia there are separate sections for women in restaurants, airports, hotels etc where from checking to serving their needs are conducted by women.

Will a Burqa wearing woman take off her Burqa if a officer or if a waiter ask her to in UK or America?

Unless non Muslims claim to be terrorized by a piece of clothing, there seems to be no connection between the two.

Biometric data is readily available to authorities for identification. A waiter waiting a table at a restaurant is not required to see people's faces. Do you send your picture when you order online?

The Sri Lankan woman who detonated herself while touching feet of Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi, did not wear a Burqa.

Also there is a general conscience that Muslim radical groups are more likely to conduct terrorist attacks in non muslim countries than in Muslim countries. That's why government of non muslim countries are paranoid about the Burqa.

Did any Muslim country suffer bomb blasts like USA during 9-11, Indian Taj hotel attack, London bombings and numerous other terrorist attacks in the West?

Did your village have communications cut off for the past 20 years?

India is still ranked 3rd on most terror hit aside Yemen, Iraq and Syria.

For Sri Lanka, Yemen, Iraq and Syria are in the West. It seems Sri Lanka came out of that civil war by allowing more freedom in society to wear what they like and intend to go back to their ways by banning it.

You did not get it my friend. What is happening in Iraq, Syria and Yemen are civil wars.

Al Qaeda, ISIS, Taliban etc Jihadi group's motto is defeat west and its allies and establish Shariah in the entire world. This motto is one reason why governments of non Muslim countries are afraid of these radical groups and have taken tough measures.

Will Al Qaeda and ISIS ever attack Saudi? Why would they? It is already a Sharia run state and so the King of Saudi has nothing to fear.
