Sri Lanka aims to be best safari destination outside Africa
Wildlife experts believe Sri Lanka could be positioned as the next best safari destination outside Africa due to the easy visibility of the Asian elephant, the charismatic leopard, sloth bear and marine giants like blue whales and sperms whales.

Minneriya in Sri Lankas north central province is a top location in the world to see large concentrations of Asian elephants, and to observe their social dynamics.
Each year during August to September large herds of elephants converge on the banks of the manmade Minneriya reservoir to feed on the lush green creating a spectacle, for wildlife enthusiasts.
Specialist wildlife tour operators are already marketing the seasonal meeting of the giants as The Gathering
Sri Lanka is also increasingly getting popular as a top destination to photograph the elusive leopard.
We are number one in the world for seeing the Asian elephant and we have the largest recurring concentration of seeing them Wijeyeratne said.
We are probably the best for seeing and photographing the charismatic leopard, Sri Lankas big cat.
We are also the best in the world for seeing and photographing the Sloth Bear he said.
Since 2008 Sri Lanka has been attracting publicity for its placid marine giants like blue whales and sperm whales.
Top marine biologist Charles Anderson believes that some of the blue whales off the islands southern tip called Dondra Head could be resident whales while others could be migratory ones crossing over to the Arabian Sea from the Bay of Bengal.
A high concentration of blue whales and sperm whales has been spotted in the seas off Dondra Head along the deep south coast of Sri Lanka during the months of January to April.
We are the best in the world for seeing the blue whale and one of the top destinations to spot the sperm whale.
Even Africa which is so good for big game safari animals cant match Sri Lanka for whale watching Wijeyeratne said.
Wildlife enthusiasts like Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne says authorities must aggressively promote a list of Sri Lankas Big Five the Asian elephant, elusive leopard, sloth bear, blue whale and sperm whales to promote the island as the next best big game safari destination outside Africa.
We have the two of the biggest in the world, the blue whale and we have the fantastic leopard Wijeyeratne said.
Seeing the leopard in most African countries is difficult and in west Asian countries its almost impossible to see and photograph them.
We are an amazing destination for big game safari he said.
