Call me bias but I don't mind, I definitely believe that the SAS are above and beyond every other special forces in the world. Massive respect for these guys.
They are because they are one of the oldest special forces. The training that they go through is really intense... in the Aussie SAS they even have to endure being tortured as part of their training

Yeh I'm a bit familiar with their training lol. Being captured and tortured for information is certainly a part of it.

Do you know about the SBS as well? Special Boat Service, I know some one that served in SBS, true badas*.

I always feel like they get far less limelight than SAS but they are just as competent and lethal. I don't know anyone personally in SBS though. My circle of acquaintances mostly includes regular and reserve army guys/gals. And a longtime friend who's an officer in the Royal Navy.

They are not one of the oldest. They are the oldest(first) special forces in the world(they were founded during WWII in the 1940s when Britain was fighting nazi Germany the SAS played a key forward role in this), and they wrote the book of special forces.
Every other countries special forces learned from the SAS or were modeled on the SAS, as such the SAS has accumulated more experience and professionalism than any other special forces on earth.

The SAS is not the oldest...thats a british mythos... winner writes history ...

Germany has older special Forces than the SAS...

Together with Italy Germany had during ww1 already combat frogman the very first special OPs.
Befor ww2 the German military secret service formed special OP units... called K - Trupps
Their first massive action of K-Trupps was during the polnish campaign...
In October 1939 (Two years befor SAS was founded) the Wehrmacht formed the first special OPS companie, to mask the duty of the unit it was called Baulehrkompanie (construction training company) in Nov 1939 they formed two more companies of the K-Trupp into a Baulehrbattalion (construction training batallion) the HQ was in city Brandenburg at the river Havel ... the reason this special OP´s unit was called Brandenburger...
By 1941 the years the SAS was founded the Brandenburger already has reached regiment size with 5 units and 3 batallions... with lot of special companies ... like parachute, diver, hunter etc.

like the SAS did long range raids in north africa the Brandenburger did the same

but again winner writes histroy... one were the famous heros the other were forgotten... but credit to the one who were realy the first...

Janissaries were no special OP units just regular Elite Infantry and Guard of the Sultan...like the Praetorian Guard in the Roman Empire 1500years befor the Janissaries

It is hard to scale which is better/harder/thoughter special OP unit... the basic requirments for the German Kampfschwimmer are the hardest of all Armys(Navy seals requirment +5-10%) in the world and they have the highest drop out quote of all Special OP units... SAS has a dropoutquote in average of 10-15% through the selection phase... and they are send directly after this to the units...
Kampfschwimmer only 0-10% made it through the selection phase (4weeks) yes sometimes they have a 100% dropout quote... they have no mercy and no second chance... for the SAS you have to walk 64km in full gear in 20hours...the Kampfschimmer has to swimm 30km with 30kg gear in ice cold baltic sea... ask yourself what you would like to do if you had to choose between the two options and you know what "harder" is....
After selection phase the Kampfschwimmer get into the real trainingphase...it took a other 3 years training befor they recive operational ready status and are send to their units
