It seems strange but in Soviet Russia had planes with tracks, like tanks. They were pretty actively used in early Soviet times probably the idea behind them was to build a real tank-plane that could fight both in skies and on the ground.

I guess idea was not to make an air tank but simply to put tracks on the wheels so they don’t skid or slip on snowy and or muddy air strips.

I agree. The tracks were there to get a firmer hold on uneven ground, may be ice.

But just try to imagine the whole aerodynamics of the aircraft is going for a toss.

Also the weight of the plane must have increased quite a lot.
