It never invaded Afghanistan. The pro Soviet Govt invited Russki troops to help the socialist Govt. They came and started fighting those who wanted an Islamic govt. free from atheist influence.

But overall wasn't there an Islamic Govt in Afghanistan before the invasion too? I mean Afghanistan was a separate country.

There was no invasion as such anyway.
The Afghans against the Govt thought the Govt was not Islamic enough. I don't know. Ask them.
