Sejong City

The construction of Sejong city is a major Korean government project slated for completion in three phases leading up to 2030

South Korea is willing to share its ideas and experiences with Bangladesh to build a model city blending the nature and modern technologies so that all could live there in peace and happiness.

Both Dhaka and Seoul, the capital cities of Bangladesh and South Korea respectively, are now overcrowded with their growing population.

South Korea has already found a solution through developing Sejong City where 60% of nation’s administrative offices, including prime minister’s office and other ministries, have been relocated.

“We’re ready to share our ideas and experiences. We welcome any cooperation with Bangladesh,” Sejong City Mayor Dr Lee Choon-hee told UNB at his office.

He said the city now has planned to have the national assembly and the presidential residence shifted in order to stand strong as the nation’s administrative capital and the new heart of Korea.

The construction of Sejong city is a major Korean government project slated for completion in three phases leading up to 2030. “It’ll be a good example in the world as many capital cities are already overcrowded,” said the city mayor.

In Dhaka, the growing population and traffic congestion have become synonymous with its dwindling liveability and quality of life.

Responding to a question, the Sejong mayor said it will take only two hours to reach Sejong from other major cities in South Korea once the project is completed.

From Seoul, he said, it is only 120 km and it will take only 40 minutes by train to reach Sejong. “Half of the city area has already been constructed.”

Mayor Choon-hee said it will completely be a different city after 5-10 years with world-class smart education and other facilities, including safety and reliability, in place.

He said Sejong is an eco-friendly green city where flowers blossom all the year round. “Sejong is composed of a double-green belt, it keeps a green space in the centre of the city, places a residential space around it and then surrounds it with greeneries again,” he said.

Sejong is named after King Sejong, the fourth king of the greatest kings in Korean history.

The mayor said Sejong wants to be a world-class city with all the dreams and hopes of the people as the name literally means “the world’s best.”

Earlier, he interacted with journalists from over 50 countries who are participating in the World Journalists’ Conference 2018 that began on March 4.

President of Journalists’ Association of Korea Jung Kyu Sung was also present.

dhaka is a lost cause, need to rebuilt it from scratch, in the meanwhile chittagong, shylet should be considered to build the next big city and be made capital of the nation, before working on dhaka

Why sylhet in particular????? why not Chittagong? If anywhere other than Dhaka that has any potential of becoming the next modernized city or the capital of the country its Chittagong.

Chittagong is no less congested than Dhaka, too many people and too many old structures there. How about building a new Capital City somewhere in the Faridpur District? Land is there, but, our culture and language is Choira ones. However, it is almost at the center. I think, Tangail can be a good location.

It has to be somewhere within Dhaka division, close to Dhaka city. We can't have our capital near India or Myanmar. Dhaka is the perfect geographical place but we now need to move and it should be near the current capital.

A city doesn't need to be capital to be modernised and what do you mean by next? Chittagong isn't far behind Dhaka in most aspect and in economy per capita, it handily outperforms Dhaka. Chittagong will go forward regardless of a status like capital.

Anywhere south of Dhaka city seems good to me.

Khulna is the right place for making a model capital city of BD. there is air port, land & sea port all infrastructure are ready. Khulna also one of the tourist zone of BD. Sundorban, Shipyard, Sixty Dome Mosque & many others beautiful places are there.

South Korea actually said about planning and building a new city from scratch. It did not say of re-building or re-locating the Capital. If it really works on it, it should also concurrently give job training to the BD town planners, architects, structural engineers and civil engineers. It can be done if the GoB establishes a few related private companies whose technical staffs will assist the Koreans and in the process will learn how to build a modern city, how to build a durable road system, how to discharge rainwater etc. etc.

The experience the BD companies gather can be further used when there will be similar projects in the future. Until now, a process of learning has not been developed from those foreigners who know much better than us, the country is unable to build towns where people can live a modern life, which is unlike Dhaka where there are buildings but without other amenities like parks, playgrounds, good footpaths, foot bridges, rainwater disposal system etc.

Gazipur or Savar, I was thinking. But they are congested too. Make Noakhali the capital, I guess.

How abt Bikrampur (Munshiganj). Its near Dhaka has a huge land emerging from padma river. And has historically had a city that served as capital until padma swept it away. I am from there btw (my family to be exact).

Not possible. Govt wont be able to acquire that much land. Besides its unnecessary.

How about Sonargaon? once it was capital of Bengal. Only 23 km from Dhaka Zero point that's 30min journey.Situated on Dhaka-Chittagong highway, has a very beautiful river and everything a city needed to be something big.

Sejong city is farther away from North Korean border than Seoul.
