India: Girl Burned Alive For Refusing to Stop Using Mobile Phone
PAKISTAN: A young woman stoned to death for having a cell phone after ruling by a Panchayat — Asian Human Rights Commission

Two girls, one Pakistani, one Indian, killed for 'not giving up mobile phones'. I'd want readers to keep 'nationalism' aside and take a look at this pathetic state of affairs. Its a mental sickness that affects the men-kind of our region. Yes, these ignorant XXXholes are from rural areas, yes they are illiterate, stupid and tied in outdated customs - yet - if its not the job of the 'educated' and 'world aware' urban youth to educate them, than who's job is it?

Both countries need to address the religious forces and political entanglement problem, religion can not become a political force to interfere in the social order, and to learn from East Asian countries.

Rural areas in South Asia are the centres of bigotry and superstitions. Education or wealth alone is not enough. In India's case Gandhi had a very romantic view of villages. That is untrue. They are the worst inhuman places to live. Migration to cities must be encouraged and basic needs fulfilled. South Asian villages must be depopulated and made unliveable. In rural isolation people become more uncivilised. Pushed together, people learn to co-exist. I am not saying that cities are devoid of this, but they are much better. People born and bred in cities are definitely more civilized.

first we need to let our villagers know that love marriage isn't unislamic… giving girls basic rights isn't unislamic..
we need more tv commercials that might open theirs minds up a bit….
i try to educate people in my village some listen some don't… then agen we don't have that have many extremists in my area

The roots in my opinion lie in the false macho image males have of themselves in this part of the world.

Add to this things like family, clan, religious stupidities and we have a huge mess.

I may add that it's not men alone to blame , women play a hand too. No girl child can die unless the mother in law agrees.

Unfortunately, there are some black spots(region wise) in SE Asia as a whole, when it comes to womens and their rights as humans.
DO remember, that these reported cases respresent only a small fraction of what ails us. The ones that are not reported or hushed up, in name of family honor, is what frightens me.
Social Upheavels enforced with a willing dand is what will improve these animals and their outlook on women

There is no difference in urban or rural youth when dealing with women..

Please do not link it to religion. In most of the Asia women are not really treated very well. It's social issue will be eridicated with education and time.

South Asia is worst than east but our whole region have a long way to go.

I do not deny that China's social problems, but there is no religious influence on Chinese society, you need to dilute the religious will have a good development.

These beliefs have more to do with illiteracy than anything else. Islam forbids murder in all forms and calls for equity of women. These people ain't motivated by religion but prejudice and sheer ignorance.

So it is necessary to resolve this conflict, played down the role of religion in social life.

The society in the subcontinent has been more traditionalist and less receptive to changes than any other part of the world. Importance given to preservation of ancient faith, rituals and superstitions have never been ceded by the people. In short, the individual and the collective response to modernism has been horribly rigid and pessimistic for centuries.

With the advent of Islam in the 8th Century and its subsequent influence on the existing Hindu belief system Bhakti movement appeared to have swept the country and led to rise of newer system of faiths but still it failed to change the organic structure of social hierarchy (both Hindu and Muslim), general outlook towards women emancipation from a traditionally patriarchal culture.
With the introduction of European modernism in the late 18th Century which was supposed to liberate (as it was believed by a large number of colonial enthusiasts) the region from ancient superstitions and dogmas failed to reach the rural India. Though it had tremendous influence on the westernized elites and urban native aristocrats like the Tagores in Bengal or wherever the British had prominent presence like Bombay and Madras as their residencies, rural patches came never under the reach of western modernism and liberal thoughts.

So, as we had been more strict in adhering our principles of faith and irrationality the frictions are bound to be more frequent and nasty. With the growing economy and effects of globalization reaching every nook and corner of this characteristically repulsive society, more will be the clash between the past and the future. But on a positive note, like any damping oscillations, this rigidness will gradually die down and it will be replaced with a mild, semi conservative quasi liberal society with the expense of possibly two or three generations more in India, hopefully.

A politically incorrect answer.
