The sons of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi said on Friday they "forgive" the killers of their father, an announcement analysts said effectively grants clemency to five convicted people on death row.

Khashoggi — a royal family insider turned critic — was killed and dismembered at the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul in October 2018, in a case that tarnished the reputation of de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

His family's pardon could spare the lives of five unnamed people sentenced to death over the murder in a December court ruling that exonerated two top aides to the crown prince.

"On this holy night of this blessed month (of Ramadan)... we the sons of martyr Jamal Khashoggi announce we forgive and pardon those who killed our father," the Washington Post columnist's son Salah Khashoggi said on Twitter.

Saudi authorities did not immediately comment on the legal ramifications of the announcement from Salah, who resides in the kingdom and has denied reports of a financial settlement with the government.

"What this essentially means is that the killers will avoid capital punishment since that is a right the family (under sharia law) has to forgive," Ali Shihabi, a Saudi author and analyst close to the government said on Twitter.

"Other legal procedures by the state continue."

Analyst Nabeel Nowairah also said the family's declaration effectively means the "murderers will not be executed".

Salah has previously said he had "full confidence" in the judicial system, and criticised opponents he said were seeking to exploit the case.

The Washington Post reported last year that Khashoggi's children, including Salah, had received multimillion-dollar homes and were being paid thousands of dollars per month by authorities.

Salah rejected the report, denying discussing a financial settlement with the Saudi government.

'Rogue' operation
Out of 11 individuals indicted in the case — most of whom remain unnamed — five were sentenced to death, three face jail terms totalling 24 years and the others were acquitted, according to the public prosecutor.

The December verdict, which was lambasted by rights groups as a travesty of justice, underscored Saudi efforts to draw a line under the crisis as it seeks to reboot its international image ahead of this year's G20 summit in Riyadh.

The murder involved 15 Saudi agents sent from Riyadh, Ankara said.

Riyadh has described the murder as a "rogue" operation, but both the CIA and a United Nations special envoy have directly linked Prince Mohammed to the killing, a charge the kingdom vehemently denies.

Khashoggi, a 59-year-old critic of the crown prince, was strangled and his body cut into pieces by a 15-man Saudi squad inside the consulate, according to Turkish officials. His remains have not been found.

Saudi prosecutors had said deputy intelligence chief Ahmed al-Assiri oversaw Khashoggi's killing and the US Treasury had claimed the royal court's media czar Saud al-Qahtani was "part of the planning and execution" of the operation that led to the murder.

Qahtani was investigated but not indicted "due to insufficient evidence" and Assiri was charged, but eventually acquitted on the same grounds, according to the public prosecutor.

Both aides were part of Prince Mohammed's tight-knit inner circle and were formally sacked over the killing, but only Assiri appeared in the court hearings, according to Western sources.

. . . .
Poor family, could not stand against a powerful monarchy. Can't blame them either, odds were too high.

. .
Rubbish! What's with this clemency bull crap? Hang the murderers.

It is common in KSA that families of a victim (either a deceased family member or one who suffered bodily harm) forgives the murderer/perpetrator and spares him/her from the death penalty in return for monetary compensation or due to forgiveness.

It is part of an ancient Islamic tradition.

That HOWEVER does not mean that they will walk away. They will still receive jail time depending on a courts verdict. So you can be spared the death penalty but you still need to do your time. It is entirely up to the family of the victim.

Not sure how that can be a bad thing?

maybe it was like: forgive or we will chainsaw you too :butcher:

You know its just a show right?
They either have been "ordered''(threatened) or bought(offered money) to do so.
Im guessing, they planned the whole show beforehand.

That is not how it works in KSA. Which is why you and the world can only mention the Khashoggi case and nobody else.

Why the world is obsessed with 1 journalists death (the first such case in KSA to date) while 1000's of journalists are murdered each year across the world, people in KSA are well aware of. We are also well aware of how certain entities are trying to milk and drag this case on almost 2 years after while they jail the highest number of journalists on the planet and themselves have killed many journalists in the past. I guess hypocrisy is human nature.

Even in the EU some journalists were killed in car bombs on Malta not long ago. The world was not crying about if 24/7 like the case with KSA. If KSA was an insignificant nation and did not create butthurt for many of our enemies, we would never hear any such news in the media of this case for this long time.

1000's of protestors are killed in Iran as cattle, people killed by the regime and you hear nothing. 1000 protestors killed in Iraq and you hear nothing in the Western media barely. List is very long.

at least they didn't force them to thank the murderers. "he always refused to buy us icecream, he was a bad dad thank you MBS"

KSA should have killed 1000's of its own people for protesting like has become a tradition in Iran.

That's a shame. A family is ruling a fake country for almost 300 years.

Idiotic troll, the notion of Arabia predates the notion of Iran (barely 2500 years old) with millennia. Worry about your crappy regime and horrible lives compared to the average Saudi Arabian who lives a life that the average Iranian can only dream about by every objectionable statistic.

More retarded Youtube clips as usual. Carry on.

Oh it happens in Pakistan also. Personally I think it's a disgrace, as financial means or imbalances of power are almost invariably used as leverage, rendering the system exploitable regardless of the underlying intention.

Mods,
I believe Saudi Arabia should be called Hijaz and Najd or Najd and Hijaz NOT after a tribe in Najd.

Also there should be freedom of expression against dictatorship and murdering.

He had been paid handsomely. Of course he has forgiven them. Blood money

Did i claim otherwise?

The point is that you and others in this thread (who are in a much worse situation than KSA on this front when it comes to journalists, I am not even going to talk about the Mullah regime that has gunned down 1000's of its own people for protesting in the past few years, their execution rate, political prisoners etc.) don't care about Khashoggi.

You are trying to "lecture" from a position of a glass house to try and score brownie points because 1) Iranian Mullah worshippers are obsessed with KSA/Arabs, Turks (Erdogan fans) now see KSA as an "enemy" because KSA is not supporting Erdogan's (so far) failed projects (MB) in the region. So reactions are based on hatred/dislike not caring about Khashoggi or some moral reasons.

As I wrote 1000's of journalists are killed all over the world by governments, terrorists and what not and how many in KSA? When a Saudi Arabian farts it becomes front page news.

Where was your and others here "outrage" when political opponents of Iran and other regional stats were killed abroad by those stats, when they jail and kill their own journalists and political dissidents?

Did they not kill 1 Arab Iranian dissident in your country (Netherlands) not long ago?

Where is your outrage when African states do it, North Korea, China, Russia, Latin American states, Asian etc. are doing it?

Or when female journalists in the EU (Malta) are killed by car bombs for speaking about corruption in Malta/EU?

Zero, silence.

People are not stupid, we know that there is a 24/7 propaganda campaign aimed at KSA from our enemies while other regional states and their crimes are whitewashed by the same media. It is not a secret. Even an idiot can notice this.

Mods,
I think Saudi Arabia should be called Hijaz and Najd or Najd and Hijaz NOT after a tribe in Najd.

Arabia remains Arabia and Arabia remains a part of the name. And KSA is not only composed of Hijaz and Najd but 10 + ancient historical regions but you are clueless so better not talk. The part of "Saudia" is named after a historical person and names does not matter, it remains Arabia since recorded time, one of the oldest geographical regions and names on the planet.

I dont care about the Mullahs of Iran or Erdogan, what happened to Khashoggi in my country(chopped into pieces),how it happened, who ordered it is what i care about.
You know it was staged trial, just a show.
Will you admit it or will you be like the Erdogan fanboys, support MBS no matter what?
What differentiates you from the fanboys?

You always use that against Turkey, yes true the situation worsened in this regard but there are still oppositional newpapers in Turkey and quite big ones actually.
The only reason why Saudi Arabia doesnt jail (or dismember) more oppositional journalists is because they simply dont exist, you cant arrest or kill something that doesnt exist.
See there was one very mild critic of the Saudi family and he got brutally murdered in such a cruel way that shocked the whole world.

So let me ask you where you get the never to take this as an argument against Turkey while playing the saudi royal family mouthpiece here?
