BRAC University A consisting of Sourodip Paul and Sajid Asbat Khandaker has clinched the coveted championship title at the Belgrade World University Debating Championship 2022. The tournament is often dubbed the "Debating World Cup".

They are the first South Asians to have achieved this honour. Previously, one of the members, Sajid had also won the Asian British Parliamentary in 2017. As Sourodip said, "Feels unreal. We never thought this was possible. Language barriers and so many other factors against us but somehow we've done it."

Before reaching the finals, BRAC A broke 5th in the open category, a new record for Bangladesh breaking the previous one which was also held by the dynamic duo. Sajid and Sourodip were the 2nd and 6th best ESL (English as Second Language) speakers of the tournament. Sajid was also the 10th best individual open speaker of the tournament.

Their opponents in the open final were Princeton University, the National University of Singapore, and Ateneo de Manila University. The final debate on reducing the global reliance on the US dollar was streamed live on the Belgrade WUDC Live Streams Facebook page.

I am surprised it's taken this long for a South Asian country to win this. We all are such a bunch of argumentative blokes :sarcastic:. Actually not.

When I was in school in Delhi I used to hate debates. My comprehension and logic was strong and spoken english decent but not great. Usual English teachers' pets who used to roam around with Shakespeare's dramas under their armpits always beat me to the list of selected students just because they sounded better and more confident. Now when I think back, none of the teachers had a friggin clue what a debate is all about. For them it was all about correct pronunciation, poise and ability to come up with tit-for-tat reply on the spot. Content came last.

In my Mumbai college we were faced with an Australian debating team and they shred all other local colleges to pieces with their debating skills. They arguments were based on solid undeniable facts and penetrating questions, something we were simply not used to.

Nowadays kids are much smarter, thanks to social media where they are repeatedly questioned and presented with strong counter points. People have realised debating is not just about showing off your vocabulary.
