Question:
Can u please tell me the differences between the different sects of Islam. I am particularly interested in learning about Ahmedis and Sunnis> Thank u

Dear Sr. S. As-salaamu alaykum. The Ahmadies (Qadiyanis) were officially declared non-Muslims by the government of Pakistan in 1974 mainly because of religious purposes, but they were declared by Muslim scholars in the world as non-Muslims much before that date. The Ahmadiyya is a heterodox Islamic Sect because it follows the teaching of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) who is believed by some of his followers to have been a prophet and by the Lahore branch to have been a Saint.
Prophethood after Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is considered a heresy in Islam and is enough to consider them non-Muslims. Sainthood is also rejected. Beside that, the Ahmadiyya group has many religious practices and beliefs that are totally contradictory to Islam. To learn more about the their beliefs, you may visit the following sites:

As to the Sunni Muslims (also known as the Ahl-as-sunnah wal-jamaah), they comprise the majority of the Muslims in the world today and their doctrine is correct and should be followed. Their characteristics are simple: they believe in Allah, they follow the authentic sayings and acts of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), they respect the companions, they don't introduce innovations to the religion, they don't have any secrecy about their belief system, they talk to you with wisdom and reason, and they are always ready to give you authentic proofs of their claim. Thank you for asking and God knows best.

these are shias and are taking part in religious event they hold annually on the 10 of Muharam ( lunar and Islamic calender ) which is the day Prophet's grandson Hussian ( one of the highest and revered figure in shia islam ) was martyred in Karbala.

They believe that they are showing solidarity....since Imam Hussain and his family were bloodied in Karbala....so they do it every year. As should be expected Pakistani shias are more emotional than the rest of the world's shias and infact do end up doing themselves serious harm..........iranian shias also lash themselves but i have not seen them going to the level of Pakistani shias....hence earning alot of admiration from their iranian brothers.

bro, this self lashing is done by main stream shia sects and is done in the length and breadth of Pakistan.

yes shias have weird sects...some of whom shias themselves consider kafir....like the alawite shias believe Ali ( Prophet cousin, son-in-law, father of imam hussain...and fourth Caliph of Muslims ) is God himself. Shias, like everyone else consider them to be kafir.

.
Not even Shias do "matam" any more. Not everyone can handle this now.

These days Shia people hire those who are willing to do it. Mostly come from Iran or so.

i dono bro how long you been to Pakistan and whether you have been to imam-bargah in Pakistan....on the tenth of muharam ( 1-10 muharam they do matam everynight inside ).....they have right to come out in procession and do matam in public. Next time check any Pakistani news channel on 10 th maharam (and newspaper the next day) and you will see the scenes.

I was planning to go inside with my friend who lives there (If you know about Al-noor society), but we were not sure if we would be allowed to go in there. Its been two months, i just came back from Pakistan. :)

He was telling me about it. I wouldn't say that "there is no more matam" but i would say it has been decreased significantly. Before they used to do worst matam ever! Now as they are getting moderate, it has been decreasing but nonetheless a little or more is performed.

Serious matam is done by the professionals, and the normal one is done by regulars.

well the town i come from....we have never had sectarian violance between shias and sunnis......so we are not forbidden from going inside the imam-bargah anytime we want to go and they donot ask anyone to do matam....they do matam we watch......they not mind at all.....so when i was growing up i used to go to see the annual matam on the 10th of maharam in the town centre.......it used to be an all day affair for me and my little brother ( nothing not even storm or rain was going to stop us ).....we used to be there sharp 8 am in the morning.....when you get there in the imam-bargah at the time there are still inside....the speeches are awesome display of oratory......then they leave in groups/procession noha-kalams.....stopping at short distances for heavy duty chest beating ( with hands )........then at the town centre....they sit down and another 4-5 speeches are made ( excellent oratory and emotions are really hyped to cresendo...saying any little hurt/pain you suffer while in the matam of imam hussain will cancal out lifetimes worth of sin etc and so forth )...its after the final speech.....which is really the most emotional of all ten days....that matam-barchi ( lashing with sharp blades attached to chains ) starts...and takes place for 30 or so minutes. then they go back in procession back to the imam-bargah. Show over till the next year.....thats how it used to be for me.

Fast forward in time.....................all grown up

i was back in pakistan 1.5 ago and completely by coincidence it was maharam time again.......so for old time sake i went along again........with all the old routine...nothing much had changed.....except that the procession was larger with more participants. So when the barchi-matam time came....a young 5-6 boy joins in for the barachi matam.....he lashed himself softly few times before an elderly shia spotted him and took the barchi out of his hand...and told him he was too young to do this.......rest of them had a go with a full heart and were bloodied like you see in the picture posted.

i donot know what kind of access restrictions they have in larger cities for any sunnis who want to go and watch and hear them..... due to fear of bombings...but in our town those people know us from facial recognition of years of interactions....at school/colleges/ or going to there shops....that is if they have forgetten our faces from us following them from imambargahn to town centre on annual basis.

quite like adherence to sunni doctrines...we are hardly following all of them all of the time....similarly not every single shia is going to be following all of there practices............but in punjab/ajk matam is strictly adhered to by most of the shias.

. .
back in 2006 religious topics were discussed by owners of the site... now its banned... strange world isnot it?
