It wasn’t a great Sunday for Snapchat, just a day after news broke that company CEO Evan Spiegel had allegedly shown disinterest in expanding the social app’s business in “poor countries” like India.

Now, the company’s facing backlash in the form of Snapchat’s app rating dropping down to as low as “one star” in recent reviews left by users on Google’s Play Store.

According to the app info on the app store, the "Customer Ratings" of the current version of the app was "single star" (based on 6,099 ratings) and all versions rating was "one and half star" (based on 9,527 ratings) as on Sunday morning. The rating for the app on Android Play Store was "four star" (based on 11,932,996 ratings).

Online users turned on Snapchat as soon as a report from US-based news website Variety on Saturday quoted Snapchat's ex-employee Anthony Pompliano as saying that company CEO Evan Spiegel in September 2015 told him that "the app is only for rich people. I don't want to expand into poor countries like India and Spain".

As expected, this got a lot of Indians angry and many took to social media to lash out at the alleged statement from the Snapchat CEO. As the ratings of the app dropped, the criticism of the CEO and the app increased.

The app was also trolled on Twitter. #boycottsnapchat became the most trending hashtag on Twitter overnight. Snapchat has more than four million users in India.

Snapchat responds to online criticism and the alleged insensitive comments
Following the controversy and massive outrage online Snapchat said the employee who made the claim and quoted by the original report by Variety, Anthony Pompliano, was "fired for poor performance," three weeks ago and has been involved in a lawsuit with the company.

To tell the truth, even if Google in China, it really is not an opponent of these companies.

If Indians could not afford the premium subscription for SnapChat , they should use something bit more affordable

Like writing post cards and mailing it by regular post.

Considering that SnapChat is free , not sure why Indians felt they were being asked to pay money which is why they feel they can't afford to pay 1 dollar

And I am making this up that anyone was asked to pay 1 dollar since it is 100% free.

Seems like Indians are suspectible for trusting social viral networks too often with out properly researching the truth behind many viral garbage (Fake news outlets ) facebook obviously one of the fake news outlet

Sometimes it is funny how quickly Indians react to viral networks , if something is free why would their CEO be giving out comments about it being for Rich people ?

FREE = FREE (Don't have to pay) , Rich guy or poor guy pay same amount 0 bucks

Therefore using common sense , a CEO of company is giving stuff for free to users why would he say Indians can't afford SNAPCHAT? Now if SnapChat was charging 100 bucks or 200 bucks per user I could imagine the CEO may have stated something (which he really did not)

If something is $0 bucks , free then it does not matter if you are Rich or Poor

The level of unemployment in India is so high that these nutjobs are now leaving fake reviews of apps in Google store just because somebody said India a poor country.

I mean how much free time you need to have to do this shit!

India has become a paranoid nation. Modi has taken nationalism to another level. Cow vigilantes killing people in the name of sacred cow. People getting beaten up who don't stand up and sing the national anthem. The list goes on. This is yet another example.

Indians are fooling themselves to think they can have a sum effect on Snapchat. India alone cannot dent Snapchat's popularity.
