Sri Lanka ranked 91st place on Transparency International’s corruption perception index for 2013, according to a report released on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka got a score of 37. Denmark and New Zealand are together the least corrupt countries out of the 177 surveyed by the anti-corruption watchdog.

On a scale of zero to 100, where zero is highly corrupt and 100 is clean, India ranked 94th on the index and got a score of 36.

The three most corrupt countries, tied on first place, are Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia, according to the report.

The results of 2013 are not comparable to those of 2012 and 2011 because of change in methodology, Transparency International said in a statement.

The watchdog makes use of data sources that specialize in governance and business climate analysis to come to these conclusions. For India, it used 10 out of 13 data sources, including Bertelsmann Foundation, World Bank and World Economic Forum.

The organization then uses this data to measure perceptions of corruption in the public sector.

This allows it to make comparisons across countries, time and in terms of quantitative data.

Among South Asian countries, Bhutan is the least corrupt with a score of 63 and Bangladesh is the most corrupt with a score of 27.

I haven't looked into it too much, but what you are talking about sounds very similar to the situation surrounding India's massive growth in 2002-11.

Well there is massive development in tourist and transport infrastructure no doubt.. But at what cost ?? SL dropped from 79th last year to 91st ..Shows how bad it has become.. Atleast in India there are reactions from the public and the judiciary to some extent, In SL you can get away with impunity as long as one is connected to the ruling family.. Some people have just become cheer leaders to the regime irrespective how bad the country is being governed, There are no checks and balances all public sector institutions have been heavily politicized, Including the judiciary and the police have been a joke for decades now.. This will not be sustainable for long

Dec 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka, with a score of 37 points out of 100, has been ranked at the 91st place among 177 countries this year in the Transparency International's annual global Corruption Perception Index (CPI) released today.

Sri Lanka has become more corrupt this year dropping 12 notches from last year's 79th place rank.

The Corruption Perceptions Index is based on experts' opinions of public sector corruption. It ranks countries and territories on a scale of 0 - 100 based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be. A 0 means that a country is perceived as highly corrupt and 100 means it is perceived as very clean.

According to the Berlin-based corruption watchdog, since Sri Lanka has scored below 50, the country has not still minimized the level of corruption in the public sector and there is a great need to strengthen the anti - corruption mechanisms in the island.

Countries' scores can be helped by strong access to information systems and rules governing the behavior of those in public positions, while a lack of accountability across the public sector coupled with ineffective public institutions hurt these perceptions, the organization said.

In this year's index Denmark and New Zealand tie for first place with scores of 91 while Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia are the worst performers, scoring just 8 points each.

Among Sri Lanka's neighbors in the South Asian region India ranked at 94th, Pakistan at 127th, Nepal at 116th, and Bangladesh placed at 136th of the Corruption index. Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh showed improvements in the corruption level from last year while India remained the same.

The thing is corruption is indicative of the government of the day, Other indicators are results of decades of implementation of sound policies.. That is not to say there was no corruption in SL in the past.. But the extend of it under this regime is unprecedented

You have to consider other indicators like HDI because huge amounts of corruption stems from poverty,hunger and people being illiterate as in Africa and India.

Exactly.. And thats a serious reason to worry.. With such high ranks in HDI's and literacy, SL dropping 12 points in an year!! Shows how bad the rule of law have become under the current regime!!

Seems like we ANZAC's are the only blokes up at this time of the day..

Well having Rajapaksa for too long is taking its toll and with his son and relatives it looks like SL is heading for dynasty politics.

I think what will be interesting to see if Rajapaksa can transfer the relative popularity he got into the institutions in the country. The least corrupt countries in the world have high HDI's and also people respect the power excercised by the institutions. And not the various families/clans
