The International Olympic Committee announced Wednesday that six additional sports will be added to the docket at the 2020 Summer Olympics from Tokyo.

The IOC voted to include baseball, softball, surfing, skateboarding, karate, and sport climbing in Tokyo. The news comes on the heels of the 2014 vote from the IOC that ended a 28-sport cap at the Summer Games. The six new sports will also add 18 more medals and nearly 500 new athletes to the 2020 Olympics, according to Sports Illustrated.

While baseball and softball were both featured in the Olympics as recently as 2008, the other four events will be new.

Climbing will reportedly feature two categories for both men and women: bouldering, and a combined lead and speed. From Sports Illustrated:

In lead climbing, the competitors start at the bottom of a course and must climb within a set time frame and on only one attempt. Speed climbing involves a sometimes easier course that athletes focus on completing as fast as possible. Bouldering involves no ropes and can be attempted several times as courses are shorter and more difficult within a set amount of time.

Karate will reportedly feature two categories, debuting in front of its home crowd. From SI:

The Olympic competition will feature 60 athletes in six kumite and two kata demonstration categories. Kata is more of a demonstration sport that shows off karate’s technique. Kumite is fighting that involves punching and kicking.

Details for both surfing and skateboarding are not yet clear.

So, they are finally putting Softball and Baseball back in the schedule

This would not be a good news to China, as they are good at none of the 6 sports. that was being added, and that's another 18 medal different

Well, what do we know is this, baseball, softball will generate 2 medal each, Karate will get 2 more medal and Climbing another 2, which make Skating and Surfing sharing 12 medals. And both Surfing and Skateboarding are basically dominated by American and Australian.. I am expecting to see US and Aussie at least getting half of these, while US traditionally dominate softball too,

The US will definitely be in gold medal contention in baseball/softball. We should also perform well in surfing and skateboarding. I wonder if Shaun White will compete in skateboarding. He's already said he's back in Pyeongchang for snowboarding.

Problem with surfing is you can't do it everywhere

I don't know if Japan actually did have good break for Surfing......They are quite deep into the ocean means the current is either too strong or too shallow, to surf, you need at least 1 meter break, maybe they will do it artificially, I don't quite know how this will work....

The US will do very good in Softball, Baseball may be a reach from Cuba, but we should be dominating surfing and skateboarding. You know what, I want to see Tony Hawk in the Olympic.........Hope he got out of his semi-retirement. He don't need to win a medal, just want to see him skate in the Olympic, that would definitely draw crowd.

Sports-climbing had me interested.

To be exact, he 2020 game will add Lead Climbing Discipline into the game, not speed climbing.

I used to do some speed indoor climbing myself, are you an indoor or outdoor climber?

I had some rock climbing lessons in my home town.

lol, I did indoor rock climb.........

For some reason, I don't like to climb outdoor, especially so after that 127 hours movie...
I did one course outdoor , it took 10 min for the instructor to get me rappel down 20 m ( hard rock). Probably will never do it on rock , Did it easily on sloped wall though. Yes however after 127 movie I kinda felt scary......

I haven't seen that movie yet, and I did that quite some time age. And Darjeeling is really a scenic place to go out for outdoor activities.

And now I'm in Utah, i barely get time to go out, such a shame.

I have done outdoor climbing as part of my ranger training, I don't particularly hate it but not very fond on it either. Rappel down is easy, I think the hardest part is not exactly the climbing part, but how to plot your route. That scratch a few head on the way up.

But yes, that stupid movie simply kill off any of my remaining urge to do rock climbing outdoor..

Baseball AND Softball? Both games essentially the same!

I used to live in New Mexico, I go out to the mountain like daily, they got a few gorgeous peak down New Mexico way , and once in a while I went to Arizona and climb Yuma Ridge and also for training. Now I move to Sydney, Australia I suppose I can climb the blue mountain, but I did not live in the central part of the state ground here are all flat. I do have an indoor climbing center where I live tho
