Singer Adnan Sami, who received his certificate of Indian citizenship from Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju in Mumbai on January 1, is celebrating his first Republic Day as Indian citizen. The singer, who was born in Britain with roots tracing to Pakistan, was a Canadian citizen.
He grew to fame with the song 'Lift Kara De' in which he featured alongside Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan.
He was granted citizenship after he made a representation to the Home Ministry on May 26, 2015 requesting for it on humanitarian grounds. (Read: The multiple identities of Adnan Sami)

Born in Lahore, Adnan Sami came to India on March 13, 2001 on a visitor’s visa valid for a year, issued by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. The visa was extended several times thereafter. When his Pakistani passport expired on May 26, 2015 he approached the Indian government seeking legalisation of his stay in India on humanitarian grounds.
