I fail to recall now, how many such officials have been caught with exorbitant amount of cash and other valuables, stashed in their homes and offices. Innumerable. And those, being caught, are only a small fraction of the total. And then the shamelessness of the those caught and their political handlers. And then the dangers to democracy. And then these bunches of scoundrels and rascals roaming freely. And then the gross impotency of the institutions.

Feel extremely powerless, sometimes.

Yes. Perfectly right. And this choice somewhat depends upon our genetics as well as upbringing. In this dreamlike transient existence, books are not a bad choice; provided somewhat comfortable means of living are as well available. That's how I feel. But, of course, there are many ways to live the life.
